I bought a 1938 truck and just curious how fast is normal driving speed for it. It has all the original motor and diff with a 4 speed. I had it up to 30mph but it sure seemed to be reving pretty high I don't have a tach so it hard to tell. Any input would be great from you guys. thanks

Mine went 60 mph the whole way home(on the back of a trailer) I hope it goes a little faster then 30,I don't want to trailer it everywhere.

Highwayman,

Don't know for sure, but I would imagine your 38 would be set up similar to my 46, (with a 1939 216 and original 4-speed and rear-end).

At any rate, my truck will cruise comfortably between 45-50, on stock 16" wheels/tires. It'll run faster, but I don't do it for any extended period of time.

Hope that helps.

38 half tons would have either a 3.818 or a 4.111 rear gear. 3/4 & 1 tons would have the 4.111. The 1 1/2 ton would have a 5.428 ratio. My 38 coupe has the 3.727 gear and I run 55 to 60 on the highway. You can go faster IF you put aluminum pistons in. The forces created by the cast iron pistons will beat the babbets to death if you rev them too high.

I know I'm getting myself in trouble. Hope my wife doesn't walk by and read it or I might get a slap up side the head  . My wife's everyday car is a standerd so she can drive pretty good. I was just joking about what I said wink
