You pick a distance past the toe board on the engine side to cut off the outer steering column housing. You leave the inner shaft longer to stick out past the outer housing so you can connect a Borgeson or Flaming River Universal joint to the inner shaft. Go to either a Bearing Supply Co. or say a Lawn Mower Repair Facility to obtain a bearing to support the inner shaft in the outer housing. I have one bearing here with the Part # 6203-RS. You want to be sure and make up a bracket to support the column shaft at the toe board. Some people just take a piece of L-stock channel and bolt it to the firewall and then take a u-bolt to secure the column to the L-stock. You then call up either Borgeson or Flamming River and give them the spline count on you steering box and the inner shaft size of the column to order the u-joints. If you take a measurement of the distance from the steering shaft to the inner shaft of the column minus the lenth of the u-joints you can get a pretty good idea of the length of shaft required to connect the column to the steering box. Keep in mind the working angle of the u-joints when your designing the shaft.
