I have been given a gift of the brackets and spacers for the 5 lug rotor set up. While I am very appreciative of the gift, it is not what I wanted to use. Rather than ask the giver to send them back (and hurt their feelings), I just want to use them to install 6 lug rotors.

Can anyone confirm that the brackets for the 5 lug and 6 lug kits are the same? I am thinking the 6 lug brackets might be 3/8"-7/16 "longer" due to the bigger rotors.

for what truck?the five lug rotors on the 71-87 trucks are twelve inch and you can get six lug replacements.

I am talking about the kits that are sold by the vendors for use on AD trucks.

The five lug car rotors they use are just over 11.125" and use a mid 70s mid size caliper. The six lug rotors are 11.875" and use a mid 70s truck caliper.

It appears the caliper may make up the difference in size, that is why I am asking if anyone knows whether or not the kits sold for AD trucks use the same brackets for the 5 lug kit and the 6 lug kit?

Am I not asking my question correctly? I know what the kits use. Can anyone confirm the fact that the five and six lug kits sold by Jim Carter, COTF, ObsChevy, etc, etc, etc use the same caliper bracket?

I can't confirm your question... Can you redrill those camaro rotor/ hub assemblies out to a 6 on 5 1/2 circle? I understand your question and your intentions as I am trying to do the same on my 1940 gmc. Buffulo enterprises is a good place to call for this question. He has made brackets for both.

I would ask the guys at NAPA if you could borrow their brake book, and see if you could find a 6 lug rotor that has the same diameter and thickness as the one used in the 5 lug kit. Then hope, pray, wish, or bet the offset in the hat would match that of a 5 lug set-up when everything is bolted in.

If worst comes to worst. I could try redrilling or a set of 5 to 6 lug adapters. The calipers float, so the rotor offset should be okay. I am waiting for buffalo to call me back on this (I have bought from him in the past). I asked Jim Carter to lay the brackets from the two kits on top of each other to compare them, but they wouldn't do it for me.

keep me posted. I have found your posts helpful. In my application... 1940... I have not found a 6 lug kit available. I would be very curious to see if this would work. I do not want to hunt down an art deco or advanced design axle to get 6 lug front disc brakes.

I just got off the phone with Buffalo, the 5 lug brackets will not work for the GM 6 lug rotors, maybe with a toyota rotor... His kits have a fair amount of offset to avoid moving the wheels outward.

According to Buffalo, interestingly enough, the 41-59 6 lug kits will work for earlier trucks, you just have to make sure you have the right inner race all you have to do is let him know its for an earlier truck.

He says installation is easier if you can get your hands on 51-59 front hubs, but it is not required to install the kits in pre 51 trucks, just easier.

I'll be ponying up for a kit this week for the 39 and maybe for the 46 before too long. I guess the early 5 lug kit will be going to the swapmeet.

You got me in the mood to spend some money too. I'll wait to here how your installation goes. I am really curious to see if there will be clearence problems with the factory wheels.

What is your plan of attack on the master cylinder on that 39?

All right, I might be giving away some of my secrets here! Keep the 5 lug kit. Save your money. It is based on the mid sized Chevy. I usually use the Camaro for reference. Now, when I converted my early 70's Chevelle rear axle ( 5 on 4 3/4"), I went with the '78 Cadillac Seville rear backing plates and calipers. Problem with using the Cadillac system is the the rotors are 6 lug. GM doing what GM does, and a 10 bolt axle being a 10 bolt axle, I looked to the five lug versions of similar years. Lo and behold, the 1979 Pontiac Trans Am has the exact same rotor only 5 on 4 3/4". Same offset, diamter and everything! Rear brake conversion done!

So, since I have and keep all those old brake books, I can look up and see if there is an application that will work. If you'd like. Let me know. We're dealing with the typical 5 lug kit, yes? 5 on 4 3/4". 11.125 diameter. Say, 1971 to 1976 Camaro?

bbswingdaddy, my truck has 16 inch wheels, I think they will clear.

my 39 is a big truck, so it's pedal mount is a little different, the mc mounts to the frame and a clevis is used for leverage. I'll just mount the mc to the frame.

mnsmith, Yes, that's the kit with which we are dealing. Are you saying a 78 cadillac seville had 6 lugs? I hought it had a big five pattern.

Doh! Bad news.

I checked the books and nothing crosses over. I was even wrong about the Cadillac. The Caddy wasn't six lug, it was 5 lug metric. Like you said, big five. I checked GM, Ford, Toyota, Chrysler products and anything else I could look at. From the 1960's to 2001. The 6 lug rotors are a flatter / taller rotor than the 5 lug versions.

So, I guess you are back to square one and will have to get the 6 lug kit.

Sorry, I tried. Nothing even came close. Not even oddball / foreign makes. Passenger or truck.
