I plan on installing a tilt column from a mid 80's Chevy van in my 1953 GMC 1/2 ton. The floor mount on the column obviosly does not come close to matching up with the contours of my floor. How do you guys suggest rectifying the situation? Do I cut the existing flange off of the column and fabricate one from scratch and weld it to the column? Is there something simpler?

Phil

Phil,
I fabricated a mount that integrates the swing pedal/booster assembly with a secure mounting point for the lower column. To seal aroung the column where it enters the cab is another matter. I will take some pics of my set up and send to you.

There are different types of aftermarket mounts, Depends on how fancy you want to go.
flaming river and ididit have both steel and polished aluminum.I used the steel one.

Wilbur,
Thanks for the links. I always enjoy building things instead of buying them, and a piece on the ididit website gave me an idea.

Thanks,
Phil

I built my own adjustable floor mount for a whopping $.97. I called Ididit and they wanted $44 for this part. It was very simple to build and should work just like their piece. I am glad to hear that this worked for you. I will be installing the column this weekend. After that, it will be time for the motor and trans. I am finally getting excited about this truck again.
