| | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 67 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 67 | Hello all, Ok, i just open my mail and i've got my Truck Owners manual for 1953 and got to page 2 which had 'conrols and instruments - 1/2 and 3/4 ton'. It has a 'Foot pedal park brake', then page 3 has 'Controls and Instruments 1 1/2 amd 2 ton' with Hand brake lever. I had come to beleive that my 2 ton GVM truck with 8 stud wheels was a 3/4 ton truck. however, i have a hand brake lever, does that mean i have 1 1/2 ton or 2 ton truck? It is a chev built by General motors Holdens in Australia. The badges on the side of the hood said Chevrolet, 1420. But the hood could have been off another truck. None of my other numbers match anything in the US/Canadian books. Now i'm confused. Any ideas?

It seems strange that there are a few differences in my 53 compared to the ones i see on the net and in books. Obviously it's right hand drive, but the hand brake, the rear springs, the fuel tank. Not that i truly bothers me, it would be nice to know.
Brendon | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | Brendon - that's a 3/4T, bigger trucks didn't have that kickup over the rear axle - the Holden-Chev trucks were made in Canada, final assmebly in AU - some pieces may have been AU made, but the main differences from the US trucks will be the same as Canadian, and CDN trucks had some previous year features compared to US, and the 'made for export' ones may have even been a place to use up 'left overs' - the "2 ton" on the tag is GVW - ie: truck weight, not capacity, your truck is not a "2 ton"  Bill | | | | | Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 158 | Brendon,
I'm not sure about trucks of that age, but I know for the 60-66 series, the 3/4 ton "always" had a parking brake on the drive shaft -- but there were exceptions based upon the trans type (if I recall).
In other words, I don't think the presence or absence of a particular type of handbrake is a good indicator. Things like Bill mentioned are much more definitive, IMHO.

You and 3B had origionally convinced me that it was a 3/4T. However, the manual confused me a little. Eventually when i register the truck i need to write the correct rating down.
