I have just acquired what I believe is a mid 50's or later 235. I can't seem to find a casting number anywhere. This mill does have a machined surface just behind the distributor with 4P(R)?83317 stamped on it. I'm posting from Australia. Could this be a Canadian or even an Oz manufactured engine? All help gratefully received.

The number you found by the distributor is the production code. This code will identify the plant where the engine was manufactured, the chassis (truck) installed, and unit(s) of engines manufactured.

I can be wrong on this, but if I am, someone will set me straight on this point, but as far as I know, GM never manufactured engines in either Canada, or Australia. All the 235 engines were mfg at either Tonawanda, NY, or at Flint, MI.. The engines destined for export to those countries were coded differently. By coded, I mean the "production code", the stampede code on the flat "tab" by the distributor.

Usually these export engines had GM/casting number
specific for export. What I mean is that for each year, say 1955 as an example: GM 35741343, would be for 1955 model 235 Canada specific.

The block casting number can be found on the distributor side, just above the oil pan flange, about mid point on the block.

The block date code, can be found just above the starter, on the side of the block. Will be a letter and number code. Each alphabet letter
A thru L represents the month. And numbers represents day/year. The year is represented by the last number. Example: D175 = April 17, 1955.
Find your block numbers and date code and repost.

My catalog of ID numbers does not help with your Engine Serial Number (sometimes called the "unit number" or the "serial number" or the "engine number", depending on the year and the type of information included in the stamped code).

However, the catalog states that 235s were built in Canada from 1958-1962 and the engine number started with a "C". For these years, the stamped code is an "engine number" - it does not indicate a "serial" or sequence number.

See if you can find the other casting numbers described above by Chevyman.

thanks for info fellas. engine has not been cleaned yet so numbers must be hiding there somewhere. will get a little dirt on my hands and repost what i find.

I just found my engine block numbers. The casted numbers are on the block right next to the starter. If fact while standing on the passenger side looking into the engine compartment, you'd be looking at the starter. Look behind the starter against the block. I had to wide tons of grime off and found.

CON4 B262

Don't remember what the CON4 means but the B262 means B for Feb. 26 for the 26th of Feb and 2 for 1962

If it was A123, this would be I believe Jan 12, 1963.

Hope I'm right with my findings.

Now you guys have me wondering what I own. I have a 1954 3100 I bought last year out of a cotton field in the Texas Panhandle.

It was one of those "was running when we parked it" complete old farm trucks.

The VIN stamped just behind the distributor matches the number on the title.

However, the number on the sparkplug side of the block up front is 3733949 which leads me to believe this is a first series 1955 235.

The cast numbers near the starter are OON4 and L196. This leads me to believe this engine was cast on December 19, 1956?

Maybe the farmer who switched the engine somewhere in time actually went to the trouble to change the numbers on the title.

Any thoughts? I know the head is from a latter than "55 235 because the thermocoupler hole has a reducer in it to fit the original temp guage. At least the shop that went through the engine advised this was a later model head and used the fitting as an indicator of this.

Any expertise or advice on the origin of this engine?

This truck has out-lived it's previous owners.

I'm confused here. I own a 1962 C10, with a 235 6 cylinder engine. My casting number is CON4 J100, If i'm correct that means my engine was made on October 10,1960?? I could be wrong, let me know what you guys think.
