If you know the firing order, the position of #1 on the cap and the direction of rotation of the rotor, the next pin the rotor contacts after #1 would have to be #2 on the firing order. In your case cylinder #8. The next would have to be cylinder #4 etc.. If you connected the second pin to cylinder #2 it wouldn't be on the compression stroke and ready to fire.
