Ive beeen working at geting my 66 ready for the road.Ireplaced plugs, wires, cap n rotor.Idrained and flushed the feul tank and replaced the inline feul filter but not one on carb.P.O. told me carb needed rebuilding as thats what his p.o. told him.Runs fine with choke 1/2 out when warm but backfires and hesitates when opend.Sinse tank was emty i added a bottle of carb cleaner good for 20 gallons to 2 gallons and ran it awhile in a ya never know atempt to solve the problem. What do you recon the problem is.

if it sat long enough that you needed to drain and flush the tank, i would put money on your carb needing a rebuild like the previous owner suggested.....

by the way, backfire through the carb is almost always a result of a lean condition..

Iflushed the tank just so i knew that all the old gas was out and any crap was too.My back firing is out the back.I drove this thing abought 300 mile total over 2 weeks last fall driveing it home and localy. It ran good but needed the choke 1/2 closed.Idont recall if it backfired then but it does now.I also have no power.I couldnt get over 45 driveing tdown my road.I must have screwed something up changeing the cap.My idle is fine with an ocasional backfire out the exhaust but no topend. One wire crossed ?

Hey Slow..Rider,
I had that same problem when I was running a Quadrajet on my 283. Finally bought a a new Edelbrock AFB and that took care of my problem.

What carb do you have? Some of those are easy to rebuild yourself.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Just pu7lled the carb.I found a big booger holding the dohickey closed. With the carb upside doun theres a second buterfly type thingy behind the secondary buterfly on the botom. There was a 4 inch piece of silicone strand a bought 1/4inch around wedged in it holding it closed.Idont think the secondarys were opening.Would that cause the choke problem?Pablo, where in cheese land ya from..

Howdy Slow..Rider,
I'm in Centuria, just north of St. Croix Falls. Moved up here from Texas 7 years ago. How 'bout you?

Excellent carb; much better than any of the new ones, plus it is calibrated for your engine.

Disassemble the carb and do a thorough job of cleaning (blow compressed air through all the passages). Put in a good quality rebuilding kit, and you should be good to go. Get rid of all the silicone. Silicone should NEVER be used around gasoline.

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

To Slow..Rider,
Yeah, not far away. Do you go to that show they have there in Rice Lake? Also to Carb King: I second the no silicone near gas. My truck quit one day and we found a blob of silicone in the fuel outlet from the tank.
