I own the manual and followed it to the letter. Raised the propeller shaft, removed the U_Joint, did it all. Still I can't get enough room for the clutch gear shaft to clear the clutch disc.Worked on this for two days.Am I missing something? Please help. Thanks

Mechainiac, I pulled the transmission straight back on the pins and let the ball enage the rear of the transmission as far as it will go inside. Still not enough room for the front spline to clear the clutch housing. Thanks

Boy, with the propeller raised out of the way, cross member removed, seems like there would be lots of room for an easy removal. Hopefully someone will come in with yet another and better idea..

It's been a while since I did anything with a torque tube, but did you disconnect and remove the ball from the driveshaft slip joint? That's the only point of interference my ole brain can picture. I also recall hat to rotate the driveshaft down and out of the way, the rear wheels must be off the ground. Hope this helps... | | |

There should be plenty of room to remove the tranny..

I remember the torque tube missing my head as it slammed into the dirt when I was removing the tranny on a 52 GMC parts truck so be careful when lowering the torque-tube as it colud really hurt

Then as mechainiac has stated that tube shaft can be dangerous. When I done mine, I put a floor jack under the shaft and unhooked the u-joints and bell and lowered the shaft to the floor. The transmission should come out now. If you're young and strong you can probably manhandle it. If your getting old like me those days are over and you may have to use a jack. Hey, didn't I get chrome beauty rings from you awhile back? They are still in the same box! :p

Then I unbolted the tube. Afterward, I would tighten the threaded hook some more and the tube would raise even further.
Another idea is to first use a jack while unloosening the tube, raise the tube up out of the way, then use a the chain idea which will eliminate having the jack stay in your way during your time under the rig.

Lower the torqe tube to the floor (in some cases the car must be touch the ground becaus then thy moove back the whole thing a little bit) then open the lid over the transmission, make sure you disconnected the mounting plate first (gives You mor room to play) withnthe open lid you can slip out the tranny.
hope it helps, Frank | | |
