It's been a while since I've done this, and I can't even remember how this works...here's the question


My valve cover is cracked, so i'm getting some new chrome ones, and here's a pic of the ones I got.

So, on one side, there's 2 holes (1 for Oil, 1 for crankcase breather) and on the other, there's 1 hole, for what???
And secondly, How is my oil cap going to screw onto that? Is there some kind of adapter, like a short pipe, for the cap to go on?

edit: after studying that picture for a minute, I noticed that the oil hole has some indentions, that may be the spot for the cap to screw onto...double-check me on that

I'm betting the PCV valve goes into the extra hole. Just make sure it's on the opposite side from the crankcase breather.

Willy's right on the money the pcv valve goes in a rubber insert which fits in the hole.

You can get the rubber grommets at most parts stores as well as the twist on type oil caps. The "indentations" are for a twist on type oil cap or breather. You can also buy rubber plugs to fit the holes in case you wanted to block one off if you use a twist on type breather instead of an oil cap.

Look inside of the holes. If your aftermarket chrome covers have baffles, then be cautious when you add oil! The baffle will severely restrict how fast you can pour oil into the engine. Most folks remove the baffle under the oil filler hole...

i use an automatic transmission funnel.i can dump the whole can of oil in it and let it seep in.

Great idea with the tranny funnel! I remember way back when I bought a set of chrome covers and nobody mentioned the baffle...I dumped a whole quart down the side of my engine! :mad: I thought if I could save someone else the trouble, that'd be good!

what does pcv stand for also. you can get all the parts you need from hotzoneperformance I got myvalve covers from them and they have all that kind of stuff

On a later model V 8 (post 60 or so), you only need one hole in each side. One side with a vented oil fill cap and one side with a pvc (positive crank case ventilation – a fancy word for “your carb helps suck air through the engine”).

The idea is that your carb sucks on one side drawing air through the vented cap on the other, keeping the engine from building internal pressure…

T-rav, PCV stands for positive crankcase ventilation.
