I bought my 57truck with a 350Chevy engine already in it. Will the engine code tell me what vehicle it came out? because I'm trying to get parts for it and all the parts stores are asking me for the year and make of vehicle? So telling them it is a 350 Chevy is not good enough? Can anyone help me solve this engine mystery? THANKS!

if you can give them a year [close] that should be good enuff, and that'll come from the casting numbers on the block, but the number on the little pad at the front of the block just below the pass side head might have a code for the application ... if it wasn't ground off in a rebuild

I think the main differences in getting parts will be if it's originally truck or car

Shannon, I feel your frustrations... I'm going thru the very same thing. Bill's right that you can get most of what you need with your current id but it's better to know exactly.

First go here with the casting number:
http://www.inliners.org >click on Casting #'s
That shold give you a year spread to narrow it down.

But then find the stamped id number that Bill referenced... I found a seven alpha/numeric code on mine (F0301BE) and took that number and went to http://www.americanclassic.com/paint_test.asp and punched it in under Engine Code and was able to use the "BE" letter code to narrow it down further... I THINK I have a 1960 car engine but I'm still confirming.

See if any of this works.
