I'm NO expert, just a hobbyist trying to put out a quality product... But this pictorial should give curious bolters a good idea of what is involved in casting... ... When I get mine and install it on BillyBob in a future log entry, I can link to your casting pages where, quite possibly, the topper on BillyBob is going thru it's creation process. | | | | Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 179 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 179 | Very well done Rick!
You are truly a talented fellow.
I am looking forward to receiving my topper and adding your wonderful piece of jewelry to my truck.

Your web page on castings is fantastic! I loved the photos and descriptions of the process. It reminded me of my days stationed in Saudi Arabia. I would go to an out of the way market and watch a back room foundry cast aluminum doors. The owner said his secret to success was imported Egyptian sand. Hard to believe a country almost totally consisting of sand needed to import more to cast aluminum.
Again, great web display!

Very cool how you made 6 patterns so you can make 6 at a time. Can't wait to see the next installment. Keep up the good work. Looks like fun. | | | | Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 199 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 199 | Great job Whizz, I ordered two and after seeing this I think I will order two more.
Your presentation has a very enlightening aspect that reminds me of the strength of good old fashion American ingenuity.

I'm sure with all your skill you wouldn't have a problem casting an aluminum grill for my truck, in your spare time. Now I've got to freshen up the flatbed to be worthy of this piece from Tiffanys.

I always thought that stuff made North of the border was motor oil! At least that's what my uncle (the one with the sugar house) said. Actually, I like any of it that doesn't include high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavor (among other chemical additives) no matter where it comes from. It just tastes a lot better. | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 608 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 608 | darn Whizzer Thats incredible Rick and one Helluva job you are doing. Ah but one must wait for all the good things to come. Keep up the good work and stay safe,(I like the fact that you mentioned safety and practice it) One question, are you going to number them? My '51 has a long way to go, so to buy topper now would be like buying a showcase for a fresh turd. When my truck is more worthy, I will be placing an order for one of those great toppers. | | | | Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 63 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2005 Posts: 63 | I'm impressed,... The lettering would have to be underneath to be seen. Unless the plate could be mounted lower. I will have to check that out.
Do you have any thoughts on how these would work with a flatbed? | | | | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 454 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 454 | Whizzer, Great feature, thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to part 2. I have always been fascinated by the foundry process. For others that might be interested in trying to cast metal, I recommend you look at the books at Lindsay\'s Technical Books. In particular, check out the Dave Gingery books.
