I've had quite a few requests from 'bolters wanting to know more about what was involved in casting the Stovebolt Topper and foundry work in general...

I'm NO expert, just a hobbyist trying to put out a quality product... But this pictorial should give curious bolters a good idea of what is involved in casting...

... The Stovebolt Topper! smile

Beautiful presentation, Richard!.. When I get mine and install it on BillyBob in a future log entry, I can link to your casting pages where, quite possibly, the topper on BillyBob is going thru it's creation process.

Great job Whizzerick!

Your web page on castings is fantastic! I loved the photos and descriptions of the process. It reminded me of my days stationed in Saudi Arabia. I would go to an out of the way market and watch a back room foundry cast aluminum doors. The owner said his secret to success was imported Egyptian sand. Hard to believe a country almost totally consisting of sand needed to import more to cast aluminum.

Again, great web display!

Whiz, that is a most excellent presentation of the process. Very cool how you made 6 patterns so you can make 6 at a time. Can't wait to see the next installment. Keep up the good work. Looks like fun. cool

Great job Whizz, I ordered two and after seeing this I think I will order two more.

Your presentation has a very enlightening aspect that reminds me of the strength of good old fashion American ingenuity.

Whizz, Thanks so much for the inside scoop on the process. I'm sure with all your skill you wouldn't have a problem casting an aluminum grill for my truck, in your spare time. Now I've got to freshen up the flatbed to be worthy of this piece from Tiffanys.

But the big question now is, what's the ETA on the toppers????

I always thought that stuff made North of the border was motor oil! grin At least that's what my uncle (the one with the sugar house) said.

Actually, I like any of it that doesn't include high fructose corn syrup or artificial flavor (among other chemical additives) no matter where it comes from. It just tastes a lot better. smile

Rick, excellent presentation, best looking home foundry that I have seen in a long time. Many thanks for sharing the process with us. Look forward to getting my toppers and displaying them with pride. Steve had a good point are you going to # them? Make them very collectable and unique.

Whiz: I stand truly humbled in the face of genius. I'm not being sarcastic. I really wish I had a skill that could not only produce a really cool end product, but also inspire stunned silence.

My '51 has a long way to go, so to buy topper now would be like buying a showcase for a fresh turd. When my truck is more worthy, I will be placing an order for one of those great toppers.

Whizzerick, They really look great, I sure wish you had an opposite that could be seen from the rear of a flatbed. The lettering would have to be underneath to be seen. Unless the plate could be mounted lower. I will have to check that out.

Do you have any thoughts on how these would work with a flatbed?

Whizzer,
Great feature, thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to part 2.

I have always been fascinated by the foundry process. For others that might be interested in trying to cast metal, I recommend you look at the books at Lindsay\'s Technical Books. In particular, check out the Dave Gingery books.

Wait, two of those red ones are mine!! After seeing the end products, I'm salivating. Can't wait to put it on "Frank" for everyone to see. Course I've got to get him back together and on the road but that's just a minor detail!! NOT wink

Whiz, they look great and thanks for sharing the process, it'll be interesting to see the rest of it in the near future. As has been noted, there are a lot of very talented people that participate here. cool I'm in awe of much of what I see.
