i recently bought a 54 chev and was told that it has a newer motor than the org 54 235. these numbers are stamped on the bloc 383 6548 gm25. does these numbers tell you what year the motor is? or is there some where you can look up these numbers thanks all ted

Hey Teddyjames, looks like the number you have is from the head except the 5 in your number is actually an 8. That head was used on 58 to 62 235s.

If you look at the passenger side of the block,right at the distibuter you will find a similar string of numbers and yes from those numbers you will be able to get an idea of the year you have.

Also there is numbers on the distributer pad that will decifer the date built and plant of origin for your motor.

According to that then I have a 55-57 261 in my 58 is that correct? 3837012<~block numbers from distributer plate.

update on searching for numbers on 235 the number 3836548 was indeed suppose to read 383 6848 and looking on the inliners web page info that number is for a 1956 head. thanks for that tip and decent 35 says numbers over starter. mine says F 10 1 so maybe june 10th 1961? thanks again ted

Hey 58 apache,according to inliners for block casting number 3837012 it is listed as 216 engine for Chevrolet 1942 to 1951.

It is also listed as 55-57 261 just as you say.

Go back to inliners and make a second check and look for 42-51 216. I have been checking casting numbers on inliners and that is the first time I can recall where the same casting number is given for two different engines.

Theoreticly you can check the date code on the distributor pad and decifer the year.
