| | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 297 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 297 | i have access to a "portable" steam cleaning unit that is used around here to clean grafetti off bricks etc and has been used to knock paint off several things as well. basically it is a power washer using steam instead of water. do you think this could be used on all the underneath stuff to knock off rust, grease dirt etc or will it eventually make things worse since it will have to "drip dry"?

| | | | | Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2000 Posts: 2,773 | Steam cleaners are very useful for removing years of caked on grease and dirt. You might want to pre-soak the worst with detergent a day or two before cleaning.
As for causing more rust, it will. The problems will show up where the grease was caked on, protecting the metal. I would consider this a first step in restoration, since the bared metal will rust faster.
