The seller says everything works but it leaks a little oil. It's never been restored. I know very little about truck repair and am looking for an old truck to take to farm markets and to haul stuff with occasionally. Would it be a mistake to purchase this truck or could I maintain it fairly easily/inexpensively? I don't want to buy a truck and be constantly breaking down or making repairs. If you've got a $70 Stanley Wal-Mart socket & wrench set, there's just about nothing you can't service on an old truck.
As mentioned before, oil leaks are common on these trucks, usually from the pan or the rear main seal. It's far easier and less expensive to find a mechanic to replace those seals and do the work than it would be for a new vehicle.. or even a 15 year old vehicle.
Buying an old truck is buying an old truck.. dosen't matter if it's 10 years old or 40. The upside to the 40+ year old trucks is that just about any shade tree mechanic can do the work.
an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

They all need work. If you have to find & pay a shop to work on it & do it right it could turn into a money pit. You might be better off finding one locally & looking it over real good & get someone knowledgable to look at it.

You know there have been folks that have sent in stories that said they didn't know much about old trucks at all ... and have gotten most of their info from you all.
So far ... no one is *complaining* so I 'spose it's possible.

I am a wanna-be mechanic with very limited skills, at best. However, I've yet to post a question here that I haven't found a quick and correct answer to.
