Took my 54 3100 out on the road after a complete frame off restoration. I put a disc brake kit on it and the front wheels are very tight. It has been sitting in the shop for about 6 months now and has a light coat of surface rust on the rotors.

What is the cure for these tight rotors. do I just drive it. Is there something to spray on it??

It is very noticable when I drive it, although I have only driven it about a mile.

Thanks
Jeff

Drive it and try to avoid any hard braking until the pads are worn in.

Try driving it around the block with one foot on the brake, just enough to give a slight drag. See what happens, If the rust has pitted, you need to have the rotors turned.

Flight-

I won't assume you have discs on all four, but could it be th proportioning of line pressure to the front? It sounds like you need more road time to figure this out, but is there more "tightness" on the front as opposed to the rear?

Just surface rust, not pitted yet, seems to be resolving with each subsequent trip around the block. And you assumed correctly, disc/drum combo. The back ones rotate freely.

Thanks everyone so far for the help

When I did my disc conversion, the floor board and toe board were out. Everything seemed fine. i went for a short drive and felt the front brakes binding. It turned out that there wasn't enought play in the pedal and the toe board was holding the break slightly.
I don't think a bit of surface rust would be detectable for dragging brakes.

How full is the master cylinder resevoir?

You did not say what kind of mc you were using. Front discs should have a maximum 2# residual check valve while drums should have a 10#. If your mc/proportioning valve is intended for drum/drum instead of disc/drum, then you may well have binding. Verify that and that the correct ports are hooked up as part of your investigation. grin
