I have a 1950 1/2 ton with the original 216. (yes, I verified that it is original) Everywhere I go on the internet, I see "replace that tired ol 216". Well maybe someday I will. But for now, I think I'd like to have some fun with what I've got. With that in mind, what modifications, if any, can be made to the 216 to increase performance. I understand a rear-end ring and pinion set will get me up to highway speeds without any added strain to the engine or tranny. What else can I do? | | |

Take it from a guy that has his truck in pieces and has never actually driven his truck, drive it as long as you can like it is. There is nothing wrong with a good running 216. If the 216 is needing a rebuild, then I would junk it and replace it with a full oil pressure engine.

The information is over 50 years old,but parts for these engines haven't changed.Guys actually raced the babbit motors back then,upwards of 150 HP, reving over 5000 rpm using the stock oiling system, even more with a crankshaft drilled for full pressure oiling.These engines are not fragile,in their day they as good as or more reliable than the competition stock or modified. But today that 150 hp 216 is more expensive that going for a later 261 with even more power and durability.But if ya got a real nice 216 and some money to throw at it......... | | |
