the first part of the page jrod linked is a mess - you need to scroll down and click on the thumbnails for the scans of manual pages to get a better understanding of the GMC numbering - here and pages following

are you saying you have a forward control delivery? that number you put up top isn't a complete "vin" so maybe it's the body makers sequence number, or just the serial # part of the vin - if you have a step van type rig, the body wasn't done by GM, so no telling what the vin might be

This is the VIN # on a 1952 GMC Light van 455578
That is how it was registered in the Province of Sakatchewan.
And this was my first post

(Is this a grumman stepvan or a GMC DUBL-DUTI or a
GMC DUBL-DUTI Grumman
Morgan Olson Step Van(Formerly Grumman Olson

This is a link to a 1953 Chevrolet model #3742 3/4-ton forward control chassis with a Grumman aluminum body. So GMC has the same chassis??.
So i cant find a Model Number for a GMC Medium Duty Forward Control Chassis. This is close to it link Look at the lights on the chev Grumman. frist Link
and on the GMC Grumman link
The van will be here I hope this week and i can get a good look at the #####
I liked to register it the Wright way
Thanks for helping

Thanks
Maxx

That number is probably the serial number assigned by the body builder. VINs did not exist in 1952. GMC used body numbers and engine numbers. Neither was stamped on the frame. Whether a vehicle was titled by engine number or body number depended on the state it was registered in. Looks like the Province of Sakatchewan used body numbers.

The same goes for '53 Chevies and anything else built in that era. In Texas the engine number was used for titling until 1956 then the body number was used. You can find your body number on a plate on the drivers door frame. You can find the engine number on a machined boss behind your distributor. You won't find a VIN.

In Texas, according to Motor Vehicle Title Manual, Pg 25-10:

Quote
"If a motor without an identifying number, such as a Ford motor or a motor from some 1956 and later model vehicle without a number is installed in a vehicle which requires a motor number, an assigned number must be obtained from this department. (Refer to Chapter 13)."
This applies to a vehicle you already have a title to. You have two problems here.
1. You have a vehicle with no title
2. You have a vehicle with no engine number to trace the original title with.

So..from Chapter 13 page 13-12:

Quote
"B. If the maufacturer's vehicle identification number has been removed, changed, or obliterated and the true identity of the vehicle cannot be determined by the inspecting officer, a court order or Tax Collector's Hearing Order will be required to establish ownership."
(Note: All bold text is bold in the original document.)

The best thing for you to do is find something, such as a registration receipt or insurance card, showing the original title number. With that number you can try to contact the last registered owner. If you can contact that owner perhaps he will file for a lost title and transfer it to you. Offer to pay all expenses plus a tip. If he won't file for lost title ask him to sign a statement that he has sold the vehicle and has no further interest in it. This will help you at the Tax Collector's Hearing. Take all the documentation you have to the tag office to apply for the hearing.

Good info, Cletis. Although specific to Texas it makes some good general points that apply anywhere.

1. Don't buy ANY vehicle that does not have a clear, clean title (unless you enjoy spending many hours dealing with pointy-headed bureaucrats).

2. If there is any question about the vehicle's title (e.g. number on title does not match any number on the vehicle), go talk to the above mentioned bureaucrats BEFORE plunking down your hard earned money for the truck.
