i just noticed my 216 dosent have an oil filter . is that a bad thing? but it does have a cool cow horn

216's didn't have oil filters stock, so this is normal. Make sure that you use SAE30 oil without detergent, though.

The detergent in most oils is there to make sure that the dirt and other crap makes it to the filter. Without the filter, it just keeps cycling around your engine, and that's not good. When you use straight oil, the dirt and crap stays in the oilpan and you can drain it out when you change the oil.

You could always put in an oil filter, though. You know, if you wanted to.

well as they say, if it aint broke,dont fix it, so for now ill leave it alone. its not going to do much good to put a filter on it nowanyway, if its not running,and i have no idea if the motors good yet.ill make that call when the time is right. thanks for the help brendanm

Brendanm's right. On the babbitted motors, the oil filter is on a bypass, and it's only squirting through there at 10 psi (on a good day). And most guys figure only about 10 percent of your oil is getting filtered anyway.

Better and easier is just using the straight 30 weight and changing your oil regularly. It's probably a waste of time to add a filter, but if you want to do it, it's not that hard.

YES, change your oil often...Chevron needs your money. It's darn tough to get by on 10 BILLION in ONE quarter. That's three months..do some basic math, the daily income will make your transverse colon implode. Their service stations are a thing of beauty.. one restroom, no air or water, no drinking fountain, etc etc etc. You can buy beer, wine, a Slurpee or a banana flavored condom, but nary a 20 amp fuse! Go figure.

my 216 does have the oil filter option on it. honestly i don't put enough miles on my truck in a year to warrant changing the oil that often but i do it anyway (typically i put about 1200 miles on my truck in a year, and i change the oil about every four months, even though i drive it daily). if i have to contribute a few dollars to chevron, or whoever, to make my truck last a little longer, well...it's a small price to pay.

as john mentioned, there is very little of the "daily" oil that actually passes through the filter system under this low of pressure. however, my feeling is that any contaminants that are caught by the filter is one less piece of crap that is trying to destroy my babbit engine.

as far as type of oil? i'd have to agree with john and brendanm720. 30 weight, non detergent seems like the best way to go. my 50 3/4 ton is working on 90,000 miles and is not showing any signs of degradation. of course i take better care of it than my kids and they're spoiled rotten...

atomarc, i know your in calif for sure now. it is sad that stations charge 50 cents for water and air yet have no service. but then i cant say if the big money stations did have that service and free air and water, that i would buy there gas. so im going to try not to complain much. :confused:

Demo Man: No Problem. That's what we're here for. If you do decide to put one in, see if you can't find the model that mounts to the firewall. The manifold mounted one is a PITA. Especially when you have to get at the generator for any reason.

Stuart: I like my colon (and my head) in an unimploded state. That is why I don't try to calculate their daily income.

i don't know if my grandpa put the filter on or if it was on when he bought the truck new. either way i'm glad it's there. if for no other reason than cosmetic.

i can't say i've had any problems getting to the generator though. i think the worst part of the filter (or i should say the canister) is having to take it off to flush all the deposits out of it. well, if that's the worst thing i have to deal with on this truck, i'll count my blessings. it could be a whole lot worse...i could have colon problems?!?!
