The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk S10 rearend

I have a 49 1/2 ton with a 235 and a Saginaw 4 speed that came out of a 72 Chevelle. I want to use an S10 4x4 rearend. I have a choice between the rear out of a V6 stick or a V6 automatic. I would be mostly driving in town with some highway driving. What would be the best choice for this setup. Thanks

Depends-what size tires will you be running? Unless you're going with really tall tires,I'd probably go with the auto. axle;usually the automatic equipped rigs run taller gearing than sticks,but it'd be a good idea to check the ratios before you make a selection. I'd find something around a 3.73 or 3.55 ratio,but that's just my preference.Just remember if you gear it too high you'll be downshifting more often on hills and may end up running out of power,which means driving deeper into the throttle-low vacuum,bad for mileage. There's a ratio/tire diameter converter at "4Lo.com" or http://www.angelfire.com/fl4/pontiacdude428/Hot.html that will help you figure out what ratio will work best as far as rpm/mph. Then your horsepower requirements will be the only remaining concern.
