Have a lead on a Dana-Spicer 3053A 5-speed manual transmission for cheap. Current owner says its an overdrive, curious to know a couple of things about it:

1) Did these ever come behind the SB, BB or diesels?
2) If not, can they use the SM465 or SM420 bellhousing?
3) what ratio is the OD?
4) what divorced T-cases were used behind them in 4x4's?

You are most likley looking at a transmission from a deuce and a half military truck.

1) They came behind the multifuel engine.
2) They have a SAE #2 clutch housing (round with 12 bolts) they also have an adaptor ring to go to the larger #1 size like the flywheel housing on the multifuel. I sort of doubt that you can switch housings for one that works with chevy 4 speed, but I have not tried. I do believe that some of the larger chevy and GMC gas truck engines could be had with a SAE flywheel housing, but I don't know what models and sizes. All Detroit diesels and most all, if not all, other industrial type big truck diesels use SAE flywheel housings. And can use this transmission you are looking at (if #1 or #2).
3) I believe it is 0.84 to one, you should be able to look it up on the net with the specs for the 2.5 ton military trucks. If you can't find it let me know and I will dig through my books.
4) I think they are rockwell transfer cases, really big, almost 3' long, or tall, depending on how you look at it, and with a huge parking brake drum. Same thing, look on the net for the military stuff.

Hope this helps.
I was all set to buy one of these for my truck, they can be had at great prices, are very strong, and no problem to get parts for, or a complete second one for that matter. It's about the cheapest way to get overdrive in a strong manual that I know of.
Then I found out about the little Roadranger RTO610 and the newer RTO6610 10 speed overdrive transmissions, and that changed my mind on the spicer 3053A. I have two non overdrive RT610's and am still looking for the overdrive version for my project.

I emailed boyce, who specialize in the deuce and a half, and got this response:

The pickup bell housings will not fit the transmission. They will bolt up to
some of the C60 bellhousings you mite try to find a copy of last months JP
magazine they did a article on the 3053 going into a Chevy.
Thanks,

> Hi there, I have a lead on a spicer 3053-A 5 speed transmission for
relatively cheap. I am interested in using this in my '60 Chevy C60
Ramp/tow truck, behind either a 350 small block chev or a 6.5 Chevy Diesel.
I'm curious if the spicer will bolt into the bellhousing from an SM420 or
SM465 truck transmission, and if not, which bellhousing will I need to use
to adapt the spicer to a GM engine? As far as I know the 6.5 and 350 have
the same bellhousing pattern. Thanks for your help.
