I bought my 49 1/2 ton recently and I'm sure the shocks have not been working for some time. Short of an IFS is ther anything that works best? I'm considering a stock spring set up with some after market shocks ( not sure what) with discbrakes. Any ideas? THX ia49

I had brackets available and made a bolt hole template from an older chassis. I have a lot of faith in the lever/arm types but they needed rebuild and it isn't cheap, so I changed. The ride is better but of course it wasn't good with leaky lever/arm types. I won't go IFS. I have rebuilt everything that was needed and kept the Huck brakes although I have a set of Bendix from a 53 but that would mean drilling a bigger hole in the steering arm. As far as discs go you would need a power booster and a proportioning valve. I don't have occasion to drive my 49 faster than 40 mph so I found the Huck set up fine for my use. I also have 650X16 tires and their narrow width makes steering a lot easier when parking than doe the 235X15 radials on my 53 Chev. Basically I like it like it is and if everything is done properly in the front end it will be good enough.

We have "talked' before but until I get out to see your chassis I thought I'd look into the assembly manual. But in section 4 Sheet 100 I did not see measurements. Am I looking in the wrong place?

The exact measurement to the shock mount is not shown, but measurements to nearby brackets are. Looks by eyeball it's about 4" aft of the rear running board mount. You can get more exact by scaling off the drawing. The position of the mount is not critical - an inch either way should not be a problem.
