What gearings were normally available in a 3/4 ton '68? I'm pretty sure it was a stick (shifter on the floor).

The reason I ask is the differential on the truck I found up on the farm should fit my '46 3/4 ton, and if the gearing is right I would take Grandpa up on his offer to swipe it.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I searched for a long time for a carrier to replace the 4.57 gears in my 48-3/4 ton. The prime donar is the 67 to 72 3/4 ton trucks. I found a bunch of 4.57 geared trucks before I found a 4.10 carrier. As far as I know, those were the only gears available for those years. There were aftermarket gears available for the 67 - 72 carrier that would get you 3.78's, but those were not factory and had to be installed by an expert.

A 4.10 would be nice...

I'll have to go out there and see what it is.

Thanks for the info!

Standard gearing for the 68 w/ 4 speed was 4.57. Also available is the 4.10, usually found in trucks with automatics. I looked for about a year before I found one locally. What you need to look for is a 64-72 10 bolt full-floating differential. All that you need is the carrier assembly, which includes the gears, pinion cover and trunnion. This will help keep the shipping cost down if you have to have one shipped. The assembly swaps out, it's a simple change.

If you remove the rear cover, there will be 41 teeth on the ring gear, 10 on the pinion. The ring gear should also have the ratio stamped on it.

Sometimes these show up on the 67-72 board, there was one there about a week ago.
