I've been discussing the issue with a friend over the net & I'm not sure what the right answer is.

to my knowledge, the last production year was 1953 thriftmaster 216 engines and 235 jobmaster engines.Starting in 1954,the 235,s became the thriftmaster and did not have a splash system, it was all pump lubed, but with the option of a bypass oil filter. The 261 engines also offered an optional filter but if not installed the oil ports on the block had to be looped (or piped) together not just plugged like a 235 or you would starve the engine of oil and SPIN A BEARING OR TWO eek p. s. the earlier engines had the filter option also.

1954, when the new 235 engine came out. New as opposed to the 235 in use prior to 1954 on larger trucks, which also used a splach oiling system.

The 1953 model year cars had splash oil with standard transmissions, and the 235 pressure lube with Powerglide. I put one of those is my second car, a 1952 Deluxe standard. (boy, I wish I had that one back).

I think all trucks still had splash in '53.

Everything went to pressure lube in '54.

But, 53 and 54 pressure lube still had shimmed mains I think.

I think KENC is correct in all his statements.

You guys aren't giving enough credit to "Chevrolet's exclusive four way lubrication system". I really enjoy reading the old pamphlets!

Early 54 was the end of shimmed mains. Shims went away when the larger journal cam was intoduced.
