I drove the 39 for the first time in nine weeks
and begun thinking about power steering...1.Sooner or later they are gonna bypass me.That's gonna mean no truck drivin for awhile with Armstrong steering.
And 2. I don't think my girl can park it.

So any ideas

NO I'm not giving up the girl!!!
She can drive the SS elCam

What about those booster kits that use a servo valve mounted between the pittman arm and the drag link and a separate piston? Then you don't have to hack up the truck. Something like this:
Steering assist kit tech article
If I was doing it I might consider doing it that way.

Jim , have you thought about putting a 46 pickup s/box in ? I believe they are lower geared and they ARE much lighter to turn when parking . smile

Jim,maybe forget the power steering. 2 years ago I installed a 41-47 recirculating ball Saginaw steering box in my 37 pick up.Its a bolt in job more or less.I had exhaust clearance interference with one of the 2 exhaust pipes.A hammer blow took care of that. Your 39 has the same high friction antique box as my 37.It now steers with the same effort as an AD truck, even with 215 section radials, its good enough.I have to thank Barry weeks who told me the boxes would swap easily.

Yeah , yeah ,,,,,, we know that Jim ,,,,, Tony and I were just trying to keep the truck GM grin

So whats the difficulty with using a GM power box ? you have a good chassis rail to bolt it to.

I just checked 4onthefloor suggestion ,,,, I had one of those ram assist setup on my LandCruiser , it worked good off road , in that there was no steering kick back , and was easy to drive on the road ( 11" Cooper tyres ) ,, but parking was still hard ,,,,, the rig didn't have enough power assist .
A power box is the story ,,,, may have to box the chassis some .

JH,
The problem as I see it is that all the PS boxes are big and cross steer. They get in the way unless they are front mount with a lot of U joints and stuff. For a drag link type setup, some of the roadster guys that want cowl steering are going with a Dodge 70's type box that can be mounted on it's side. It's aluminum too. LOL.
I've seen a power steering rack that was rear mounted, but was mounted to the axle with a splined joint for suspension purposes. The alignment and the ackerman worked out, but it looked too much like it came from your area (Mickey Mouse)LOL. Just a couple of ideas for you to ponder.
Regards
Dennis

Proffit, I would even [censored] on a few Coyotes, if I thought it would do any good, but it would probably only make them smell like a man.
If you can't drive your 39 anymore just send it my way, and when you can't... just send.... I'm never to old to drive old trucks or .......

You might try a suicide knob on the steering wheel.

Jim, I think the article you may be thinking of is located at www.classicperform.com/power2.htm

I scabbed onto a Saginaw power steering box out of a 60's Chevy pickup to put in my 51 should I decide to do this someday. Without reading the entire article again, I kind of remember the author being a little uncertain about one of the mounting bolts. I seems that only two of the bolts hook to the frame and an "ear" has to be welded to the frame for the third bolt to go through. I don't think it would be that big of a deal to make a little better mounting system. I also remember Phat saying something about when you turn hard right the inside of the tire will rub on the steering box, but with a little planning, this could be handled.

BTW, I recently aquired a 248 GMC engine out of a 51 GMC 350 truck. I want to use this engine in my 51 Chevy pickup after making the necessary adjustments for the GMC's longer length. Are there any peculuarities I need to be aware of regarding the 248.

Good to have you back, come again when you can stay longer grin

As you can see you must make a mount for the front
and move the rad forward

248 likes a lotta cam and not as mush lift as the
270/302

Make a water connection from the back of the head to the pump to let the water syphon up.

Melling makes a high pressure oil pump and get the big pan off a bus

Oily....when I'm too old you'll be rolling a chair
around.....and [censored] WORKS!

Maybe I was dreaming!!

Then Oily woke me up

And I've routed rather stupid/large pit bulls by [censored]... so it works....maybe just not for you

Jus kiddin...but it does work!

JH,
The Toyota 4 runner steering box is from a '79 to '84 model. I could e-mail you an article from a 1994 magazine that describes the installation on a Fxxd pickup, but according to the fellow who sent Jenny and I the article, the procedure is the same for a Chevy or GMC. You need to be able to open MS Word to read it.
Also, we are interested in your disc brake conversion in the tech articles section. But what is a Toyota "hardbody"? I kind of remember the name from their advertising...

52, that's a NISSAN (a.k.a. Datsun) Hardbody. The little rigs they made from about 1987/88 up until the Frontier came out (1996?)
