The oil slinger just throws the oil out so it wont get on the brakes. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. If you all need help doing what Wrenchbender said to do, we can help with that as well! Don't sweat it, Either here or in the Engines and Drivelines forum we have plenty of fellows who can walk you through it.
If you know what year and model Mom's truck is, that can help us get started on what you might need.
First of all, you're sure that whatever is leaking is oil and that it's from the axle? Sometimes it could be something else leaking from somewhere else, running down onto the axle to look like it's an axle leak. Just be sure it isn't brake fluid or something else -- rule out the easy stuff before you start tearing into the axle.
Once you get to that point, the experts like Wrenchbender can take over. But we'll git 'er done!
Thanks for stopping by and I hope we can help you get it taken care of!
Regards, John Milliman

I am printing this out so my Dad can see it, as HE is the one who requested the oil slinger info, and is also the one who will be fixing the truck (which is a 1950, by the way). Once I get more information, I will let all of you know! Thanks again! ~Bethany
