The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk 17" 3 piece Split Rims

Has anyone out there done the Stockton Wheel "Thingie" of cutting the centers out of the "Split" rims and having Stockton Wheel weld them into a new "Radial Ready" 1 piece solid rim? I have 2 of them at their shop now, waiting for further info. If any one has gone this route, Did you make them into a 16" X 6 Rim? My ultimate goal is to run a tire as close in diameter as the original 7.50x17 inch tires. If anyone has gone this route, What size rims did you weld into, and what size tires did you mount on those new rims? My thoughts are to mount onto a 16x6 rim a 215x85R 16 tire or on a 16x6.5 rim a 2.35x85R16 tire.I need to keep in mind the 3.75 inch back spacing and also the fact that there is about 3/4 inch space between the existing rim/tire and edge of the tie rod. Any help GREATLY appreciated, Pickup soon ready to roll and NO decent "Tennis Shoes" LOL

There was a posting a while back by someone that had five 15" splitters made into the 16" rims, at Stocktons. He didn't like the result because of the setback, which was 3 1/2" and sounded perfect to me. I have read of others getting the 15" done the same and had been very happy.

You need to be careful to get the correct result. As they cut the center down to get the correct diameter, the setback changes because of the curve. You would really want to make sure that you can get the correct setback out of the 17s when this is done.

I have thought about this option for my '40 1 ton pickup. But looking at the huge rear drums, I don't think I could go down to a 16" rim and still fit over the rear drums. The front drums are smaller and should be no problem.

I have a 48 1 ton that had the 17" split rims.I got rid of them and got some smooth 16" rims at a trailer shop.They fit perfect and I think I can even use the original hubcaps if i put the clips in them.
