I would like to mount the cab on a newer chassis, to make the vehicle highway capable and safe, and then add a correct pick up box.
Any suggestions on a chassis I could look for that wouldn't need major modifications?

If you intend to keep the 1-ton load rating the answer is probably different than if you are looking to create a short-box 1/2-ton.
Does you 1-ton have dual wheels in the rear?
