I'm trying to replace the original 4 blade fan on a 235ci with a flex fan but can't seem to find one with a hole larger than 5/8" for the shaft. Does anybody know of a source for these or do you have to modify one of these fans. I've checked out several local and online parts but no luck. Places like Chevy Duty and American classic have fans but are all original. Thanks for the help.

Why do you want to replace the fan? Flex fans aren't all that they're supposed to be. They crack, don't pull as much air , and as a mechanic, I see plenty that fail. Go electric, or use a late model fan with a fan clutch - make sure it spins same direction!

Good luck!~

I have an electric fan on the front pushing with the original pulling. However I have an airconditioner installed and being in the desert over 105 degrees it tends to run slightly hot, and to much over 110 at idle it gets too hot. There doesn't seem to be enough room for an electric fan pulling on the inside, thats why I thought a flex fan would work better. I'm just looking for something extra, any help would be nice. Thanks for the reply. smile

Also, the flex fan is a BIG power hog. Can't remember the numbers, but it takes a lot of hp to keep that blade flat at speed. eek If you must use one, the only way that I know is to machine your own adapter, which will place it even closer to the radiator. frown

If I'm not mistaken, you could use a later-model water pump. That way you could use newer fans.

Your best bet is a electric pusher fan.
Most of the electric Hayden fans will push or pull depending on how you wire them. put it in front on the condencer and there should be no problems. I have done this to several trucks and SUVs in the Dallas area.
for wiring it get a generic 4wire relay. Tap into the compressor power wire to run the relay, run a fused hot to a power source to the relay for the fan. This way it only runs with the compressor on.

PS All for about $80- $100 in parts

What about clearance on a late model water pump? I'm going to see if I can get the fan shroud to fit in that tight space, that should keep it a little cooler. Thanks for reply's. smile

I put a pusher electric fan on my '49 AD , wired the relay live - it comes on a couple minutes after shutdown due to heat soak - this is the way it's supposed to work , I don't understand why folks have trouble understanding this . I am told having both the electric and the stock fan actually slows down the air flow through the radiator when driving due to turbulence (?) sounds about right to me .

I didn't have any problems with the electric fan as a pusher untill I installed the air conditioner, I just can't sit at a light very long. Haven't tried the shroud yet but will get to it maybe this weekend. smile

Sounds like you need to go to a 4 row radiator. Increase you cooling capacity by 1/3, will make a big difference. Had a 64 with a 230 that we added a/c to, back then you could get a 5 blade replacement fan. It was still marginal on cooling in city traffic.

If you haven't got a really good fan, you could reduce air flow with the four core and cause overheating.

If I get a 4 core radiator will I still be able to use the original fan or do I still have to look for some kind of replacement. How about a radiator from U.S.Radiator? Will they fit?

Since the 4 row radiator is thicker, one way of installing it is to remove the top piece of the radiator support and move the radiator forward bolting to the front leg of the support instead of the rear leg. My friend got one out of a larger truck and had it recored. I don't know anything about the US Radiator products, I've always dealt with a local shop. We have one here in Wichita that is great to work with on older equipment.

I hate to mention the F word, but I found something very interesting other day while sight seeing in the local wrecking yard. All the mid-full size, 85-90 F*** cars were missing their elec fans. The only ones I could find had collision damage. Someone had collected all the good ones from at least 45 cars. The fan is about 15" square with a nice clean molded shroud and at most 2 1/2" thick. They have about 8 thin curved blades. They look like turbo blades. If I ever go with electric, this is the first one I will check out. I'm not sure on the years because normally I try to not look at F*** so that I don't ruin my supper.

I got one of those F*** fans for my Suburban.... I'll just mount it oval-side-down! grin

Seriously... thats a great source of cheap fans.... I see mostly Mopar fans fail at work, others seem decent

I cut the corner out of the shroud this weekend but it isn't hot enough to tell, the temp's only in the mid 80's. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Thanks. smile

Rat make sure the condenser for the a/c is away from the radiator by at least 1 1/2 inches. I see alot of them right on top of the radiator. If you still have problems we have been mounting a remote a/c condenser under the truck with its own fan.Did not like the idea a t first but has worked well.

Phat its away by about 1 1/2 inches. I would like to see a pic of the condensor and where is it located. Did you use a shroud when you mounted it?
