Yep--my little AD 55 took me on a little squirrel hunt today. Fall time activity I guess--I noted it was rainin last nite--good time too head up to the ranch--got up early -- left about 4:30 and headed north--Nice trip--little traffic- just the headlights bouncin around and me and the little ole truck--took both a .410 and a .22.

No heat in the truck but still warm enuff where it didn't matter--sipped some coffee. Truck is capable of goin 80 but I mostly went about 50--divided road but single lane-- US 289--some commuters--always some fool wants to get right on ur bumper but I got a little dash mounted push button switch that takes my brake lights to ground--that backs em off--right quick and gives me a grin too.

Pulled in to the ranch a little before daybreak--my old man was out chorin but spoke to ma before headin up a creek bottom. Drizzlin and damp but perfect day for squarl shootin. Leaves pretty much all off the trees and the musty damp smell of fall in the air. Took the .22 as I had plenty of time. I knew it wud be a gud year as pecans produce heavy every three years and this was a heavy year. Had 8 plump little females before 10 o'clock. Make gud chili meat.

I guess it has to do with how you were raised but fall huntin is something I've always really enjoyed and SOMETHING I'VE ALWAYS USED MY TRUCK FOR--no deer here--just birds (principally quail and doves) and squirrels. For birds, I've got a little O/U Browning shotgun--lotta fun at least for me.

Very little seasonal change here--might account for the fall interest in bird shootin. Goin out alone with a good rifle or shotgun. Something from ur youth maybe--a hankerin for when times were simpler and people seemed to be more self reliant and self supportin--same kind of feelin I have about my old truck--don't need a mechanic or some special stinkin computer to figure out which plastic part to replace--reminds me of a time when things were well made and wud last a lifetime.

Cleaned the squirrels and spent the afternoon vistin with the folks-- nice day even tho it rained pretty much the whole time--but takin the truck out to do a little shootin on a rainy fall day has always been a special thing for me.

Sorry if it offends anybody--guess we don't all use our trucks the same way all the time. I 'spect that Tony and Milliman are reflectin on this "trucks only" rule. I have. John had a good idea when he started the lounge--people cud talk trucks in the shops and get to know each other in the lounge. Pretty smart. The Bolt was unique because people cud not only share an interest but get to know each other as well. War kinda spoiled it--Bolters were as divided as the rest of the country--cudn't be civil. Be interestin to see if Milliman changes his mind and loosens the place up some but it ain't my lookout.

Guess if Jolly and Sensing start runnin things--I'll move on to Kook's site and twist Ken Brown's tail till they throw me off. grin grin grin Tony may hafta lock this one down too--but its truck related!!!!! smile

Thanks for the story bzn,
I miss the days of squirrel huntin' in Alabama. You brought back fond memories! I've been thinking about buying me a Stovebolt down south to have one to work on when I go visit Dad (and take hunting). My cousin had a '58 short fleetside last year in an estate sale he was doing. I should give him a call.....

Here in western Kentucky, one of the traditional uses of squirrel this time of year is squirrel tamales. Yummmmm!

Oh, Buzzin,by the way, I monitor this site on the day to day basis and report to Generalissmo Milliman who has given me the reigns as far as site content is concerned.
I do respect the opinions of others with reguards the content on Stovebolt forums, and have had email discussions with many guys here.
With that said,I appreciate your sarcasm on others running this joint grin
You don't really eat those squirrels,do ya?Just rats with fury tails. But I think I had rat once at a Thai joint grin

What a wonderful story!!! I love any kind of hunting. I hate squirrels...they have gotten in my attic before and make a mess of things. I tried trapping them since I live in the city, but I only caught a couple of them. Against the city's wishes, I wore out my pellet gun shooting those "rats with good PR." I have heard that they make good eatin', but can't seem to kill enough in one day to make a meal.

Next week, I get to go pheasant and goose hunting with business associates and my in-laws.

Thankfully, we can still enjoy the outdoors and firearms.

Phil

Tony--no worries--the sarcasm you reference was not intended towards you--Since Ken is off makin the big bucks--I've been teasin over GMC trucks --apparently hit a sore spot--although u'd think with that big Chebby.......Sensing just pilin on.

Squarl chili is ok--pound the meat good and marinate it some--jalapeno and chili powder in with it--I've got some 4 alarm ornamental peppers--gotta be careful with those--(mexican yard kid ate one and ran around the place like a scalded cat)--I like multiple meats in my chili--twice cooked-little flank steak chopped up good, whatever bird meat you got and venison if it can be had--little tomato paste; few leaves of marjoram--let the whole mess cook down. Bowl it up with crackers--Stuff is a little gamey--but gud.

Sorry to hear they're pesterin u with whiny emails--evangelicals I imagine grin grin --not enuff to have ur own beliefs--gotta control everybody else, what they post etc etc.

Hell, run it as u see best--I got no complaints and I don't think anybody is controllin what u do. smile
