The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Auto Prowl...

I live in a small town about two hours (by ferry and driving) from Seattle. We have a low crime rate and a pretty laid back "do unto others", "pass the good karma", etc. attitude in Port Townsend.....BUT, someone stole my CD player/stereo out of my glove box, destroying the glove box in the process as well as ripping out a bunch of wiring.

Question is this: Has any seen replacement glove boxes that are'nt that coated cardboard kinda stuff?

I would like to put something beefier in there so I can mount the new stereo more securely. The last one I had to keep my oil rag jambed underneath to keep it from bouncing around too much as the cardboard started to tear.

A sheet metal shop like the guys that make heater duct and flashing for roof should be able to help. If you want the inside flocked the materials come from crafts stores---bag a stuff and spray glue

If you pick a player w/remote control you can hide it lottsa places

Thanks for the sheet metal idea, I could probably bend something up in the shop.....could be kinda fun.

I am pretty thankful that I don't lock the doors of the truck when I am at home and that they did not decide to use the fire extinguisher for anything, the only real damage was to the glove box itself.

I remember driving to Port Townsend every year in the Orting School District Boltbusses and whooping up on you guys during the football, baseball, track and crosscountry seasons.

The sheetmetal thing works well. When my was done we used the original holes that the glovebox mounted in.

The only problem is you no longer have a glovebox. I always have thought about redoing mine to make to include a small storage bin so I have a place to keep my insurance and registration.

I've used resin to soak the cardboard glovebox liners to good effect .

There is a place that makes black ABS gloveboxes , I dunno who nor where but I've seen a few .

I don't like 'em cause they're :

A. black

B. so doggone thin .

My stepmother lives in Port Townsend .

I think I will order a replacement box and then pattern it for making a sheetmetal one.

Hey Rusty Rod, how long ago were you coming up here? If you have not been to Port Townsend lately you should swing by next time your up this way (VW Nate, you to....if you visit your stepmother.....).

There is a lot of old iron up here, there are four or five Stovebolts within a couple blocks of us and my neighbor across the street owns a great classic auto showroom/parts place on Washington St. that's worth the trip alone. We've been off and on here since I was a kid and the wife and I finally decided to make it full time. I am self employed and it requires 2 extra hours of driving to the airport because I travel for work, but, the scenery, the town and the neighbors make up for it...we have water on three sides of us and are only 40 min. by boat from the San Juan Islands.

I havent been up there in more than 20 years..

The Ox had a sheet metal box inside the dash for the glove box.. I took it out, because it was too big... but it seemed to work pretty well... I've got one of the cardboard repops, but have not installed it yet.
