I've been using the hardware of this since graduate school in the 70's--my experience is that ur mind either works in RPN or it doesn't. I have difficulty with non RPN calculators por ejemplo. Friend sent me the link -- FREE HP 12C EMULATOR Pretty neat to have it on the computer--got mine on the start bar--use it all the time and beats the snot out of Gates' calculator--if you like these calculators.

speaking of this, not much good at math, how do you convert cubic inch to liter,, like what is a 235 equal to?? thanks...Fred

Joker - I just e-mailed a fantastic conversion program to you. It is a .exe file. Just select your input (cubic inches - 235) and your output (liter) and you get your answer (3.85096).
This program will convert almost anything, volume, distance, area, torque, desity, force, etc.

Once you use RPN, you can never go back. I have been using Hp's since 81 and I use them exclusively now. My 48gx has unit conversions built in. I am so dependent on my calculator, that I can't do anything with my plain old head. Our survey gun even uses a 48gx as a data logger.

RPN seems to be dying off, but I use my HP48GX almost every day, and it's almost 10 years old. I like RPN for most calculations, once you get used to thinking in "stack" mode it gets really efficient. I use Mathcad for crunching long algebra. I would like an HP emulator for my Palm but I haven't found a stable freebie one yet.

I'm an analog electronics designer doing instrumentation, so I do a lot of quick back of the envelope type calculations. When I start needing to keep track of things like tolerances and temperature coefficients I turn to Excel or Matlab.

The 235 is just about 3.9L, by the way.

Jeez, can you guys still do anything longhand? multiply cubic inches by 16.387 to get CC's ,ya know like pi,a formula learned in HS

My wife uses her Polish ethnicity to claim stupidity when she doesn't want to learn something new. (It's really her German stubborness...) I tried to teach her to use my RPN HP32S. No go. She gets out her old adding machine and spends an hour at it.

Me, I'm mostly French extraction. You can guess what I want...

For those of you wondering what the heck is RPN, it's "Reverse Polish Notation". It's a calculator that's designed to do things like:

32 enter
16 divide
shows answer of 2.

The beauty of it is that you can keep going and going and going on long complex math problems. They feature a stack, so you can solve one piece and start another, while the last solution is "in the stack" (a little bit of memory to hold a few numbers). Once you get the second part solved, you can use the number in the stack and keep going with the bigger solution.

As stated above, once you get your brain wrapped around it, it's the only way to go.

So I went and got that, bzn. Thanks a bunch. The only drawback I see is that it is not real easy to read the labeling of the buttons, so it's hard to know what I am doing. Several guys at works still have HP12Cs and swear by them. I'll have to see if I can get a picture of one to refer to for the key labels. Those guys are going to be tickled pink when I share this with them.

I see another drawback. This is a financial version. A scientific version would really trip the guys' triggers where I work.

Yes, the letters are hard to read especially for old farts like me--but Ive been usin it for so long, I know where everthing is. By the way, a Google search will turn up plenty of for sale HP RPN emulators both scientific and financial that can be enlarged etc.--typically $15-20. This is the first free one I had seen--thot I'd pass it on.

I started with RPN in the 2nd grade when Dad would bring home the desktop size card readers from work (son of an engineer) in the mid 70s. I have been through an 11C (my favorite, 22 years old and still going like new. Only the second set of batteries), a 28S (all I need is a little more leverage?), and now use a 32S.

If I could find an emulator for the 11C, I may have to buy it.

I went through undergraduate business school on a 12C, and hated every minute of using that thing. For grad school I bought a newer-design TI (at least in part because I couldn't find the 12C - it eventually showed back up).
