The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Bed Cross Sills

I'm getting ready to weld the cross sills on the frame of my 57 chey step side. I have three sills two are the same and the third is flared at the ends. Where does the flared one go? One source says in the center and another says inbetween the center and rear.

actually there's 4, + the very front and very back - the middle 2 are thinner than the other 2, as they go in the area where the frame kicks up - and I hope you're not welding them to the frame of the truck they bolt to the bed wood and box, then the whole unit bolts to the frame

When I took it apart they were welded to the frame, but this truck had been hacked up. There is some pads that came with the new sills should they be welded to the frame or does it matter they bolt on as well?

folks do any old thing to keep'em workin!
if by pads you mean thick square washer sorta things, they're just shims to seat it fairly level, and may not even be necessary - may be some rubber pads too that sit on the frame to stop body squeek, but the only part welded is the rearmost sill below the gate that gets fixed to the stake pocket boxes there, and maybe the frontmost one, tho' I forgit just now, and my assembly manual is on loan - that's a handy book if you can find one around, or have the $$ to buy one
