I would eventually like to have rims on my truck that are painted body color with chrome rings, stock caps and whitewalls. Are the reproduction rings and caps pretty much universal? Is there something I should be looking for? I see online cheap generic steel rims that will fit on my truck, but will the caps and rings fit on the plain old rims?

What should I be looking at.
Yes I know this is probably a really basic question.
And yes I am aware of people who make expensive rims to do exactly what I want but I am looking to save a few hundred dollars here.

Don't you know who I think I am?
I've been thinkin' about freaking out. If I could just find the time.

How cheap?

My truck came with steel wheels that look like they came off of a late 90's Chevy mini-van. They fit. I put trim rings on them and left the center caps that were on the truck. It looks ok. I'm thinking about going to an earlier style center cap though. I'd expect these wheels would be pretty cheap at a salvage yard. I've seen some 56 small caps that I like. I just haven't checked to see if they'd fit the wheels.

In2Deep,

When you said generic rings and caps, are you referring to items sold by restoration parts vendors (for Chevy trucks) or are you referring to parts that are sold for any brand 16" or 15" rim?

The reproduction caps and rings should fit an original wheel (they did on both of my trucks).

I do intend to buy the rings and caps from one of the usual vendors American classic, brothers Chevy Duty.

I am concerned about special divots, holes, grooves, sizes or something I should be looking at on the rim itself.

It seems there are several junk yards and swap meets and other places where just a plain old steel rim is cheap.

In2deep,living in CA you should be close to a speed,(hot rod ) shop.I live close to Summit performance,and they have a very good display of wheels,center caps,beauty rings,etc.I find it worth the drive there to actually look at this stuff,rather than look at pix in a catalog.They also have a very knowlegable staff to help you. Just a thought.

In2deep, I have repro hubcaps and SS rings on my 46. I have orig. style 16" rims, It all works together & looks good. If you are going to buy used rims I would suggest you get originals for your truck that way the caps and rings are sure to fit.

In2Deep;
Don't buy cheap rings! Make sure that you get either triple chromed rings with a brass/nickel undercoat or better yet, stainless steel. I got cheaper ones and they rusted right away. Did a search on the net for stainless steel trim rings and found a reasonably priced site. Unfortunately, I forgot what the name was.
