I know there have been several posts on this topic. Still, I don't know of a solution for my problem.

I have a '65 GMC horse van. It's a 1 1/2 ton, dual-wheeled job with the 305 V6. The van part is made by Imperatore in PA. I have worked on and off to get it ready for the road and would like to use it a bit. Yeah, even to haul my horse now and then.

Problem is, I can't seem to get it insured. I am in NJ. Regular ins. is either non-existent or EXTREMELY expensive. Like $1600/year for just liability. If you can get it.

Antique/classic ins. would work fine, since I won't put more than 2000 miles/year on it etc. But they all have this stupid "garage kept" restriction. This thing is tall. Very tall. I don't have a garage that big. I am not concerned about vandalism etc. Straight liability ins. would be ok.

Any suggestions? Do they really check to see if it is garage kept? Do any of these companies operate in NJ that don't have that requirement?

just a suggecstion, do you know anyone that has a garage big enough for it? if so tell the ins. company your keeping it there (inform your friend of the plan etc.) - if the ins. company even asks.

You may need to contact one of the "specialty" insurance carriers like those that insure street rods or classic vehicles. Buy a copy of a specialty car magazine or a Hemming's Motor News and check under "services offered - insurance".
There is somebody who will write coverage for it.

any of the specialty companies I looked at had the garage and don't drive to work clauses. I have my classics insured for liablity only, costs about $400 a year here in Kansas. My friend has his 52 fully insured for a set value through State Farm.

I think I agree with Joker on this one.

Try Farm Bureau. Since you have a horse or two, you'll probably qualify with your truck. I've saved a bunch, with a higher liabilty limit and better service, over my previous insurer.

Look under Farm Bureau or New Jersey Farm Bureau. They'll take care of you.

I'm also having registration problems ,my ins person needs to know the model and i setteled for a quote under c/r 1500 series,pick-up with full coverage, was 382 per year,,but their computers don't go back that far so what's a guy to do,i gave her the model # from the data plate ,didn't help....just go with it or argue with the governement that it's not a 1500 series,or is it?

I live in NY and use classic insurance thru state farm. As long as your vehicle is old and "restored" and not a primary or secondary mode of transportation, you can use this. It is really cheap too. Does not provide collision coverage, so if your truck is worth mucho bucks, you will need to find another alternative. I have a couple old restored vehicles and drive them about 1000 and 3000 miles a year with this coverage. Cost is about $120 each per year
