I am a novice, need some guidence.
I have a chevy one ton, 1955, model 3800, with a six cyl. Have been running it for three weeks and no starting troubles till today. The floor starter looks like original equipment. I checked the ignition switch wires, seem to be tight and connected, no loose wires there. The starter looks like original equipment, but looks like there is a replacement switch on top. Shiny and clean condition. Not knowing exactly what to do, I turned the fan manualy then tried to start, no luck no ignition noise, no clicking, just no sign of life. There is power, lights and horn are working full power. Any suggestions?

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,798 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,798 | Give the starter housing a series of moderately-firm taps with a ballpeen hammer, where the housing steps down to a smaller diameter near the back. Then try the start pedal. If that makes it work, pull the starter and have somebody put a new set of brushes in it, or buy a rebuilt starter. It sounds like the brushes have worn too short and tapping with a hammer will re-seat them temporarily. Don't count on it working too often, though!
