First Hello to everyone. Looks like a very good board with a lot of dedicated people with a lot of knowledge, something I won't be bringing to the site but will be seeking.

We just bought our 14 year old son a 1960 Chevrolet stepside and it needs a lot of work. Has a 6 cyl. and 4 spd. Lots of rust etc.etc...lol

I have been searching this site and others looking to find out what the id numbers are and would appreciate your help with the id of some of this stuff.

Just took this off the inside of the cab by the drivers door...STD RP0723A

This off the engine..B37 S18 under that was 241 and then 570 under that

Up on the head was the number 3835913 then GM21 under that. Looked on the inline motor site and saw some that came close but not this one. Has a single barrel Rochester Carb.

Any help would be much appreciated. My son (stepson, the reason for my handle.lol)and I will be doing the project together and I hope we can do it all. He is a great kid and we have two years to get it done when he is old enough to get his license.

Welcome! Great idea building a stovebolt with your stepson. I suggest getting a 1960-1966 Chev/GMC Truck Factory Assembly Instuction Manual and a 1960 Chevrolet Truck Manual. This books are a priceless resource for information regarding these trucks. I bought mine from chevyduty.com but you can also get them from LMCtruck.com. Best of luck with your project.

I'm seriously thinking about selling my 62, 3/4, LB stepside and getting a Dodge diesel, PU.

Greetings Evil,

When I try to identify casting numbers, I do a web search for the number plus the word "casting". Usually get quite a few results, though it seems there is much more info available for block numbers than for head numbers.

The 3835913 head was used on 54-62 235's according to one source. Other sources only list it under 54-55. It's the same head that's on the '54 235 in my '53 truck. Mine also has the numbers 918, 241, and 570, though I have no idea what those numbers mean. I'm guessing B37 is the head casting date (Feb. 3, 1957). Mine has B36.

RPO (regular production option) 723A refers to the paint color combination. I found one reference ( paintscratch ) that shows this number as "Garrison Gray" for 1960 trucks.

More info can be provided if you find the truck VIN, the engine serial number (stamped on pad to rear of distributor), and the engine block casting number (somewhere on the right side of the block).

It seems like you should be coolstepdad for doing a project like this with a 14-year-old.

B37818241570 My son had to look as I couldn't really make them out at that angle. lol, eye's are not what they use to be. He said that the B could be an 8 and that the second 8 in the 818 might be a 3 and that the 5 could be a 6.

Where in the World Wide Web Are Them There Stovebolter? -- this was a "fun" project that turned into a giant. Gord and Paul are working on some scripting to make this more efficient. But, you'll find out who else is in Oregon ... and Washington ... and Australia ... and ...

And don't forget the trust "search" button in the menu bar. We are trying to put as much info on the pages and Squeeze is trying to help me with "keywords" stuff so that doing the Stovebolt Google ought to help our Bolters finds LOTS of neato stuff.

Where did that number (B37818241570) come from? It doesn't seem to make sense for either a casting or serial number, even considering the numbers that may be other numbers. It may have the right number of digits for an engine serial number, but the format is wrong. It's too long for a casting number. I'm stumped. :confused:

I am pretty sure my son got it off the engine, down low on the passenger side. I could not see it with the light we had but he was pretty sure about it.

Will be over getting the pickup ready to bring home tomorrow and will look again to verify.

Went over and took another look at that number, his eye's are a little better than mine but not by much.LOL

That number is the number that I put in my original post with the 918, 241, and 570 numbers you could not figure out. He just looked at them a little wrong and strung them all together.

Thanks for your time, wonder what those other numbers are? Maybe we will find out eventually.

If it might help you tell your wife that I wish I would have started the project for my son a lot sooner than 14. 4 months lol.. I don't know but like ya said, you can give it a try.
