hello guys n gals

i am picking up the old truck parts this weekend and for the first time i'll be opening the doors up to see what i got for the trade .

the problem is , i've looked at several chevy sites and have not been able to break down the v.i.n. and the rest of the info on the plates .

the first plate has 4,400 lbs stamped in it

the second has the serial number that has no letters 51314XXXXX

followed by a body serial# 14833

trim # 359

could someone break this down for me.

well i guess a caadian truck is a bit differant than the american ones....

my other option is to mail off a request to the general here in oshawa, ontario , canada and hope their archives are atleast a little up to date

I have some information regarding the serial #
51314xxxxx
The first digit tells the year (5)=45
The second and third identify the make and the series (13)=1/2 ton
The forth and fifth digits tells the body style
(14)=pick-up delivery
The balance of the serial # identifies the particular vehicle (xxxxx)
This information from a Canadian Chevrolet Maple Leaf Parts Catalogue series 11-18 1938-46

I read somewhere one time that the Canadian General Motors has even more information.. or more specific to your exact truck information than the US division... maybe they kept better records or something.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure they have the restoration packs up there also.

Another thing to try, go to the link below and look for the Parts Vendors that say 'Canada' on them... I think there are 2 or 3 linked in the list... I'm sure they could point you in the right direction or help you out.

i was sure it was a 1 1/2 ton with the 4,400 lbs on the first tag , but i guess thats why i'm here , to learn

The 1/2 ton has a curb weight of 3010 pounds, add 2 people to the cab and 1000 lb payload and you've got the 4400 gross weight.

it's saturday 9:30ish and i'm off to get the truck , will take a couple of pictures of the ol' girl in her current resting place . its always fun to look back at the start of a project

i'll try to get a link to the photos if i can , to share with the rest of you . i've never tried to post a picture or link before as i'm not the most computer friendly. (i still have to write L&R on my shoes so i don't get confused with directions...) lol

now where are my keys...
