| | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 | CNNstory An Oregon man discovered earlier this month that his year-old Toshiba Corporation flat-screen TV was emitting an international distress signal picked up by a satellite, leading a search and rescue operation to his apartment in Corvallis, Oregon, 70 miles south of Portland.
The signal from Chris van Rossmann's TV was routed by satellite to the Air Force Rescue Center at Langley Air Base in Virginia.
On October 2, the 20 year-old college student was visited at his apartment in the small university town by a contingent of local police, civil air patrol and search and rescue personnel.
"They'd never seen signal come that strong from a home appliance," said van Rossmann. "They were quite surprised. I think we all were."
Authorities had expected to find a boat or small plane with a malfunctioning transponder, the usual culprit in such incidents, emitting the 121.5 MHz frequency of the distress signal used internationally.
Van Rossmann said he was told to keep his TV off to avoid paying a $10,000 fine for "willingly broadcasting a false distress signal."
Toshiba contacted Rossmann and offered to provide him with a replacement set for free, he said.

This may be a bunch of dribble but it did seem interesting to me ... I'll lay it out for a while and then delete it. As a Coast Guard Radio Operator for 27 years I'd say this is very interesting ... 121.5 mHz is the Aeronautical International Distress frequency, it would be unlikely (actually it would be strange) for a vessel (other than military) be it big or small to be carrying equipment that could operate in that range. Small vessels usually have VHF Channel 16 which is a "Distress and Calling" frequency. They also could be carrying HF and MF frequencies if they are working (travelling) offshore. The fact that it was eminating from a TV doesn't surprise me a whole lot as a mistuned receiver (TV) can generate a large number of frequencies in the mixing stages. But not usually at powerful enough level as to be detectable from a range other than a few feet and with sophisticated equipment. Then again those satellites are extremely sensitive and sophisticated. I remember stories as a kid of people in England who did not have a permit for a radio receiver were caught by the authorities because of the frequencies being generated by their equipment. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 | Oh, I remember those days. When I grew up in Holland we had to pay a yearly sum for tv. We had two channels and they were on the air from 7pm to 11 pm, no more.
There were radio cars that would go around the neighborhoods and they were supposedly looking for illegal sets.

I was in Civil Air Patrol when I was in High School and we regualarly got to run around looking for the plane that had it's transponder going off in the hanger. it happens about once a month in the houston area. the big ships and large yachts use them as well, they are on floats in a special case, if the case goes under, the float breaks a contact and starts transmitting. but I never got any callouts on any TVs...  -Mike R> | | | | | Joined: May 2003 Posts: 77 Member | | Member Joined: May 2003 Posts: 77 | it happens about once a month in the houston area.
