It is that time of year where I start planning for my annual trip to Central and SW Kansas to hunt for old trucks/cars/pheasants/quail although not in that particular order. If there are any other bolters out there who would like to meet up with us along the way for some good hunting during the week of 11/22 - 11/27 (Thanksgiving week) drop me a line and we can firm up a plan.
Bird hunting looks very good this year and there are always an old stovebolt or two to discover along the way.

Houston 54, where exactly do you want to look? I know where some stovebolts, and pheasants and quail are hiding.

I am about in the middle of the state in Russell.

Never been through Russell but our plan is flexible. Let me look at a map and see if we can get close. We do plan to be around Larned at some point in the week. Thanks for the reply.

Larned is about one hour southwest of us.

I have a sister and brother in law who live 10-15 minutes west of there.

I might be available that Friday or Saturday, will have to see what happens. Will be in Abilene on turkey day, plan on hitting the farm then. Haven't seen anything up there lately, it was so dry. Last fall I flushed one quail and let it fly. Didn't even see any songbirds. Ponds have all been dry there for about 4 years, hopefully there's some water in them now.

The KDWP website shows good reports for quail and pheasant this year, I hope they're right. Far west part of the state is still pretty dry.

If you were going to be further southwest than Larned, I would be able to meet you. I have heard good reports on birds from Ulysses, Hugoton, and Liberal, KS.

I hunt pheasant, quail, and geese in Dalhart, TX. One of my employees owns a guided hunting service and lets me hunt for free if I help him. Texas Parks and Wildlife estimated over 400,000 geese on Rita Blanca lake in Dalhart last winter. Lots of fun!

Oh yeah, I get to see a few AD and TF grain trucks as well.

Our trek takes us through Garden City, Lakin, Uylesses and Liberal on the homeward leg. Thanksgiving is typically spent in Garden City at the Red Baron. Truck hunting is pretty good around there. If you want to link up around Liberal on the 26th or so let me know.

The trip is near. I got the trailer all ready to go. Anyone else out there wanting to hunt trucks and pheasants in Kansas between Nov 21 and 26 let me know.

I have family in Garden City and used to go pheasant hunting there every year, but since we started having kids, the hunting has slowed to a stop. My brother got two deer and his limit of pheasants in Garden last year and is heading that way again this year. There are a lot of stovebolts in that area. Now that the corn is cut down, you can see the stovebolts hiding on the farm sites. Have fun and good luck. Wish I were there.

On your way back, go through the Oklahoma panhandle out of Liberal. We don't use salt up there and you can always see trucks for sale in those parts.

Are you located in the panhandle? We head south from Liberal right through that area each year.

Just got back from my annual Kansas hunting trip and although I did not limit out on pheasant I sure did on old cars and trucks.

Outside Garden City Kansas is a gentleman named Tom Reed who over the years has saved many a car and truck from the crusher that now they cover about 40 acres. Included in this collection of old iron are small bolts, big bolts, cars, tractors, threshers and combines. I took many pictures and hope to get them up soon. All of his collection is for sale but he will not part out any - you buy the whole vehicle. Tom is a great person and generously gave about two hours of his time to give my son and I the grand tour. If you are ever in the SW corner of Kansas, this is something any car enthusist would enjoy. I have dibs on the 37 Dodge sedan though.

Also in the trip I found the 59 Napco that I tried to buy two years ago. It is available again and it may bump the 59 big window off the next to do listing. The same party also mentioned he had a couple of 57 chevys behind the trees. Turns out they are 57 2 door belairs. One is complete and the other is missing the interior. HUMM - how much for the gold one? On top of that was a true barn find on the same farm in the form of a 1950 F1 with flat head V8, complete, no rust, with the marble shifter knob still in place. Looked like a museum piece and only $1,500. If I were a Ford guy.....but I am not.

In addition were various 54 3100's and a straight 54 F100 in a small north Texas town. Hmmm, 54 Ford - nice lines, almost looks like a task force chevy - Hmmm. (I am thinking here ...Where can I stash all these?)

And a great time was had as the farmer pointed out an old Hemi engine sitting on the ground, a nice fat pheasant shot up and then felt the business end of my son's 12 ga Remington.

Pretty good trip with great memories.

Did you happen by Scott City? Most of my family is from there or is still there. The 40 that I'm restoring lived most of its life there on the farm.

Scott City is a bit north of where we generally hunt. Since we have found all the trucks in the SW corner we may migrate up-state next year. By then though I hope to be neck deep in some of the trucks we found this year. Time to pull the flat bed out and let it earn its keep.

I keep trying to guess how many I can hide behind the garage from the management.

Found a '50 6400 near the Colorado state line in KS that I'm awaiting more info on. One-family owned since new, always shedded, cheap. If the weather is nice in the near future, I'll probably end up with it. I'm not in the panhandle, but go up there whenever I go to Colorado.

I wish I could have met up with you guys. I had the task of moving last week and this weekend. It sucks going from a 2200sq.ft. house to a 1000 sq.ft. apartment while I find a new house. Also, the truck had to go into storage at the farm until I can acquire another garage to work on it in.

Back on topic, my company is having a VIP pheasant and goose hunting trip this weekend for a select few business associates. I look forward to making feathers fly!
