... am I to assume that I WILL be in for trans repairs or is there something I could do? Should oil level be topped off regularly?

You can put 140 gear lube in it but it won,t
help much. It,s usually in the front drive
bearing & you can put it in without comepletely
dissasemblying the trans. Just be careful to
not let the rollers drop down in the trans.
