I just finished installing a pair of Carter YF 2100s on a dual Edelbrock Intake and I am having problems with them leaking at their bases after a drive. The Edelbrock is installed on a "54 261 bored .030 over and rebuilt 3,000 miles ago with Fenton headers dumping into 2" straight pipes 18" in length. I am using exhaust heat from the Fentons to heat the Edelbrock. The straight pipes were installed temporarily so I could drive the truck to muffler shops for estimates. A new 2" dual exhaust system with 27" Smithy's will be installed on Tuesday.

The Carter's are stock 2100 YF's removed from two running 235s. They did not have leaks at their bases when they were removed from the 235s. Both had new kits installed before they were installed on the Edelbrock. At the moment I think that the carbs could be leaking from the seal at the accelerator pump linkage. I am gonna pull the air horns tonight to check out those seals. I am sure that I replaced them when I installed the new kits; however, I am not sure what else to check. If the carbs had leaked before I would think that the throttle shafts needed rebushing.

Anybody got any ideas.

I forgot to mention that the 261 idles smoothly at 450 rpm, the vacuum guage stays at a steady "20" at idle and it appears to accelerate smoothly at all throttle positions. I will admit that I have avoided "WOT" in order to avoid the local law enforcement. grin

I am also wondering if the stock 395 jets and metering rods in the 2100s maybe a little too rich for the engine. If this is the case, please let me know of some leaner jet sizes to try. I have looked at the plugs and they do not appear wet and are beginning to turn a nice shade of brown.

Thanks For Your Help

Hey Jon,

Are you talking about where the bottom of the carbs bolt up to the base of the manifold? Are both carbs leaking? Does the excess gas appear when running or after you shut the engine off? (Are you running insulator blocks or a gasket?) Since your going to have the carbs apart I'd check the float levels and check valves. Also, check your fuel lines into the carbs.

64K10,

The gas is on the bases near the throttle shafts. It is just a light coating that occasionally dribbles down onto the manifold. The gas is there when I pop the hood immediately after a drive and when the engine is still running. It eventually drives up after I shut the engine down. I am running insulating blocks with gaskets on top and below the insulating blocks.

The funny thing is that I can have the engine idling in the driveway and/or vary the RPM's in the driveway for twenty minutes and not have any leaks. Yet if I go for a twenty minute drive the carb bases are wet with gas. I guess that is why I was thinking the seals on the accelerator pump rods that leak when gas is sloshed around in the bowls during a drive. I guess I'll know more whenb I take 'em apart. Thanks for your suggestions.

I just got done checking float drops and the seals around the accelerator pump lifter link. The seals are installed and the float drops were set at 9/32" per specs. I lowered the float drops to 1/2" and will see if the leaks get better. So far they are not leaking as much; however, I don't think that this solved the problem because the lower float setting seems to have created a slight stumble upon acceleration, just as I was afraid it would.

It still seems as if another Carter YF I took apart several years ago had a thin shim that fit around the accelerator pump lifter link and was on top of the seal and forced the seal down onto the float bowl. I think I might be missing those shims on my 2100s. Does anybody else recall the shims and if they exist where do I find replacements?
