I was wondering if a 292 out of a 76 1 ton would make a good replacement. I figure the six would be better on gas, run smoother, and should have as much torque and power as the gutless 305. I will of course be rebuilding the 292 and perhaps put a cam and 4bbl set-up on it. The truck has a granny four speed in it and I was wondering if the swap would be do-able without too much trouble. The 76 has the same trans. | | |

JMO, you'd be better off with a stock sbc 400; a bit more HP...and TONS more TORQUE to push your heavy truck. Orrr, maybe a stock BBC454 from a truck/suburban...7.9cr, runs on 87 octane, a bit more HP, and even MORE TQ. Naaah, just stick with a stock sbc 350 or 400; it'll bolt right in.(make sure the 400 has its original balancer/flexplate).

Do you currently have a 292? I'm working on one for my 1966 stepside that will have a 4 bbl and probably won't be as good on gas as a 305 v8.
If you are looking for a 292 there are a couple places nearby that will have 'em. Austin's Truck parts is one. He has a 292 in an old LP gas truck just as you turn into the lot. George Alsobrooks up towards Hiram also has several. He has 2 or 3 long blocks in an old covered trailer that he'll probably let go for a hundred and a quarter or so.
I need a good resource for precision machine work in the area so if you know of any good places in the Douglas County area please let me know.
