After taking my '46 2 ton from not running to fully driving (and stopping!) with alot of help from the stovebolt page, i've had the bug to get a smaller pickup for driving around town.

A '46 2 Ton is probably a little on the large side for quick runs to the gas station for smokes.

So yesterday while looking for some parts, I stumbled across what looked like an early 50's Chevy pickup sitting in a yard. I couldn't get too close since it was behind a locked fence, but I called and the woman who answered the phone said, "Make me an offer and it's yours!"

So i'm going there today to have a look at noon, cash in hand, and might just end up with it.

Any thoughts as to what a 1950 1/2 ton would be worth in original, intact, solid condition but not running with 4 flat tires?

As you know there are many varitables including Rust and completeness. A basic haul-a-way truck in your area probably starts at free and works it's way up to $650. How much do you want to invest in it? If you are looking for resale, how much work and money will it take to fetch $1000, $2000 etc? If it's going to be used for parts, make sure that you calculate your time, storage and getting rid of the skeleton before purchasing. Make sure it has a title or a transferable bill of sale, that's what stops me from buying some parts vehicles....like I need more anyway! Check out ebay and other sources for comparisons and get pictures to share, it's much easier to be accurate with good pictures. .......g

Well the asking price was $600, and I bought it for $300.

It's a 3100 with a rock solid body, tailgate is included and in good shape, the motor was rebuilt 16 years ago when they bought it, and their daughter used it during her high school years. It's sat there since the daughter went to college.

They didn't have a battery in it, but the engine turned free and the fluid in it looked alright, the interior is in decent shape, and the seat was professionally recovered when the daughter drove it.. so it's flat out mint looking (with the exception of about a 1/2 inch of dust)

Glass is all good, doors both open and close.. about the only bad thing I really saw with it is the home made bumper on the front is mighty ugly.. and it looks like somebody welded some sort of rack/cage deal just behind the drivers door, just before the drivers side rear fender.

The whole truck is painted in a primer greyish color.. some might think thats a bad point, but hey.. im just going to use it as a truck to run errands.. the primer looks kinda cool.

Now i've gotta round up some friends to help me get it up on the trailor and bring it home, which might be tough, since the joint its at closes at 5 (wish I had one of those electric winches on my trailor you guys were talking about in another thread!)

You know, i've always preferred the '41 thru '46 body style, and have no idea why I even looked into it.. I guess theres just something about an old lonely 'bolt sitting in a yard or field that just gets me.. but once I got up close to her, I was instantly in love. The truth is, I probably would have paid the $600 asking price had the woman not budged. (I offered her $200, she said $300 was the bottom dollar, I said, "Sold.")

The other upside to this truck is that the wife hates my '46 2 ton.. when I talked to her on the phone after getting the '50 she said, "Maybe I can drive it to work sometimes when you get it running."

Somehow I have a feeling that what started with a '46 2 ton sitting in a feild is going to turn into a little more than that.

darn it, my wife has never asked to drive my 52..

It's good to land a good deal from time to time.. god knows I probably still walk with a limp after getting the industrial strength back door'ing on other deals in the past.. I guess it all evens out.

I found a dude who will pick the truck up and bring it to me for $50.. so it should be here by 5, and you can bet i'll post pics of it shortly afterwards!

Good job! That sounds like a home made tire carrier. You may be able to change fluids, dump the old gas, open up the carburator and clean out the varnish, squirt a little oil in the spark plug holes, maybe change the points and cap and I bet you will have it running in no time. .........g

PS: Most importantly, check for spiders!

I'd like to find a picture of the "stock" tire carrier to see what one looks like.

The man finally brought it home on the flatbed about 7PM, and after putting air in all four tires, I got to work on it by taking out the seat, opening both doors, and letting the pressure washer do it's thing.

I learned from my experience cleaning out my '46 2 ton that years of dust and mouse crap kicks up pretty easy in the air, so a little more wiser this time around, I used the pressure washer.

Not only did the moisture keep the dust to near 0 level, it did one heck of a job cleaning it out.

After the pressure wash treatment, I sprayed the heck out of just about everything that moves with WD40. By the time I got done with all that it was dark.. so i'll wait to take pics till tomorrow and post 'em.

Under the seat I found what appears to be the original jack, which was a pretty cool bonus I hadn't expected.

Ok.. so after feeding the cattle, I snapped a few shots of the truck on my way back in the house.

Chack out that gnarly "Mad Maxx" home made bumper on the front! While i'm sure it's great for pushing stuff and keeping the grill from getting dented, I think i'll be keeping my eye out for something a little more "traditional" to replace it.

AIR CONDITIONING! I seriously doubt it works, but it's kinda neat to have in there.

Perhaps some of you experienced 'bolters can tell me if that spare tire rack looks original or not.

Heck, that radio alone is worth almost what ya paid for it.

Looks like you made out well! The radio alone could fetch you what you paid for the truck. The A/C unit may be worth having someone look at to see if it can be repaired, although it will have the R-12 freon in it. Snap some more pictures of the dash, engine compartment and the tire carrier. .......g

That truck is welcome in the "Big Bolts" corner of the garage right along with your two-ton.

For criminy-sake, now, don't go and repaint it! The truck is just plain beautiful as it is. You got one perfect for those "necessary" trips to town.

What's wrong with R-12 I sadly have to change my system over to R34 this summer cause my compressor bit the dust...it's gonna be too hot!!

It's got a cigarette lighter in it, too.. not to mention you can move the seat forward and backward!

Compared to my '46 2 ton, this '50 is like a new caddy!

I was going to spend the afternoon tearing down an old grain building but after taking some shots of my wifes candles on the '50 (I snuck in a wide shot) the wife said, why don't you just go do that in the morning, and spend the rest of the day working on your truck.

So it's off to the autoparts store after lunch to load up on needed truck starting supplies.

I did an eBay search to see what that radio was bringing, but couldn't find one.. lots of sideways mounted radios for cars, tho.

When I get a battery in it i'll see if that radio works.. if it does, up on the auction block it's gunna go!

Given how fast you got that '46 running, my guess is that you'll have this one on the road before the weekend is over! Way to go!!
