A guy gave me a '51 3 speed transmission today. I took the cover off and the lubricant seems to have gotten real thick and gummy. I was wondering about rinsing the insides out with a solvent(kerosene) and then refilling with transmission fluid. Any thoughts??

I can't see where flushing out tranny should hurt. Make sure you get it washed out as clean as you can. smile

we steam clean trans and r/e out all the time it will not hurt it grin

Suggest you drain well and wipe out bottom thoroughly to get any grit out before you flush it--otherwise you could loosen grit and put in suspension of the new grease--right into the bearings!
Personally, I'd just drain it on it's side in a warm place for a week, then add new grease. eek
