Hi everyone, I'm new on here as I have just bought my first Stovebolt, a '64 C10 stepside which came from San Diego, CA. These aren't too common in England so I'd be grateful for some basic advice:

My truck has a straight six and 3-speed manual. I believe the '64 engine should be a 230cu but may have been swapped - how can I easily tell a 230 from the earlier 235?

Assuming the rear axle to be stock, what gear ratio is it likely to be?

What gear ratio is top gear on a 3-speed box?

Welcome Limey. My folks spent time across the pond at Mildenhall base in the mid-60s, I wasn't around yet. Your 64 should have a 230, top gear is 1:1, rear ratio standard was 3.73, w/3.07 & 4.10 optional. Hard to describe the diff between 235 & 230, but a 235 is more bulky looking & usually has a draft tube. Brian

The 64 came with the 230. It should have a spin-on oil filter at the right front. 235 had an add-on filter. Stock rear gearing was 3.73 with the 3 speed.

There should be a casting number on the right side of the engine. On a 230 I think it's just benind the center, raised letters in the side of the block. six or seven digits. If you go to www.inliners.org you can look in the casting lists to determine which block y'all have.

The 235 is a lot larger six (in terms of physical size) than the 230. It's physically heavier than a 292, and about the same height. Your truck will definitely not have a 235.

A couple more things - the 230 will have two small lifter covers and the 235 will have a single large one. The 235 usually had front mounts in light trucks but the 230 always has side engine mounts.

a 235 has a distributer that the whole thing turns with the vacumn avance.
