One of these faces belongs to an older gentleman who comes in every morning in his work truck and sits with his colleagues. Don't know his name but as always we nod to each other in passing. This morning he came in wearing his blue blazer, grey flannels and a chest full of medals! I was very moved. He was on his way to the memorial service. Goes to show, you never know who they are for the most part. As I walked by him on the way out I said "thank you" and left it at that. I think and hope he understands my thanks and appreciation. | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 510 | Speaking of recognizing those who served our country, I should mention my wife's grandfather. He didn't serve in the armed forces, but was a civilian worker on the Manhattan Project in Washington State.
He left Utah with his wife and baby daughter (my mother-in-law) to go to work there and was sworn to secrecy. He never spoke about what he did when he returned to his home state. As a result he was called all sorts of names, from coward to draft-dodger. For a long time,he was shunned in his community and church. But he never said a word.
Eventually he was recognized by the armed forces and taken to Washington DC for a tour of the Pentagon and to meed some high-ranking military officers. They asked him what he had done to receive such respect and honor, and he said, "I'm sorry sir, it's still classified." They all respected his commitment to his oath of secrecy.
It was only last year when many of the things became somewhat common knowledge that he told his story. I had the honor of having him as a guest in my home as he told of the work he did to develop and maintain the centrifuges and other Uranium refining equipment; the long hours and hard work he did and the sacrifice that he and his family made in contributing to bringing an end to WWII.
He told his story in a very humble manner, with no self-aggandization...just the facts, as far as I could tell. When he finished his story, I had tears in my eyes. I got up, walked across the room and shook his hand. All I could say was, "thank you." | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,946 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,946 | Rich Winter U.S. Army 1970 - 1972 895th M.P. Co. I registered for the draft as Viet Nam was ending, but was not called up, and did not volunteer.
My dad served in Korea, and his brother was served at the same time, but in Alaska of all places.
My grandfathers were both too young for WWI and working in strategic civilian jobs during WWII.
Best man in my wedding served during Viet Nam.
My wife's father was taught Chinese in the Army. My wife's grandfather, a WWII General, is buried in Arlington National Cemetary.

I didn't serve. I had a draft number about at the middle, IIRC. But Nixon was pulling us out of Nam when I was a senior in high school. Some guys one year ahead of me went.
God bless you and your fathers and your family members who fought to give us the freedom we enjoy today.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

I've traced ancestors back as far as the French & Indian wars, after the family emigrated to South Carolina in 1763. There's a Revolutionary war officer buried in a little churchyard there, so I guess military service is a "family tradition".
Thanks to all of you who carry on the tradition for us old warriors! Jerry

PBS ran a wonderful special on Arlington National Cemetary the other night. Hope many saw it. It even makes you prouder of what these soldiers/sailors/marines and air force types did for all of us. I am not forgetting the merchant navy either. A wonderful peaceful place. On another note my father-in-law was a RAF Lancaster pilot at age 19. He was too young to have a drivers license so had to use his bike to get around. Old enough to command a Lanc but too young to drive. Interesting! Sadly he was lost over France in 1944 about 8 months before my wife was born. Up here in Canada November 11 is our memorial day of sorts. Our only day to remember the veterans. I was very proud to see the thousands of people of all ages attending the services at the cenotaph. | | | | Joined: Sep 2004 Posts: 74 Member | Member Joined: Sep 2004 Posts: 74 | last summer, my family went to the east coast, we went through Carlisle and Gettysburg, down to DC and Arlington, then through Virginia and back. When we went to Arlington, my dad and I climbed up to Gen. Lee's house and looked down. It brought a tear to my eye seeing all those headstones down there, and then realizing that that wasn't even half of the people that have served our country.
