This is what I'm trying to decide for my 292. Many of you know the engine build specs (.060 overbore, 500 cfm 4 barrel, mild hi-lift cam, 36" primary headers, etc.,etc).

Which of these would be the best match for this setup? I have both ignition sytems ready to go. Thanks!

It all depends. Is the HEI stock, or does it have a hot module, coil and advance kit? Is the Mallory equipped with vacuum advance? Are you driving street or strip?

Street driving, I would prefer the HEI with the advance kit, hot coil and module. But with a vacuum advance, the Mallory will do fine, too.

I have always been partial to the HEI they are vey dependable and easy to manage if some thing does happen

The Mallory looks nice but has no performance advantage whatsoever. If you don't mind changing and setting points regularly, go for it. But with the HEI you can run a wider plug gap and there's so much aftermarket performance stuff for it that it's no contest, in my book. Some of the dual point distributors have no vacuum advance - if that's the case sell it to a vintage racer.

If you're looking at it from a preformance view point, I would go with HEI.
What happens to a new set of points from the moment you install them ? They start wearing. So, basically, your fire power is constantly on the decline. Granted, it is a very very small amount each time the vehicle is run, but I don't think it is as effecient as an HEI.
