After rooting through my new shop manual and assembly manual for the '58, I am beginning to think that heaters might have been a dealer install or something because neither references heater stuff.

When the truck was painted, all the controls were unhooked, the controls them selve need a little work, and I likely need a new heater core.

Anybody know where to get some decent info concerning heaters?

I have found good info in the accessory install manual for my truck,,Red58 has some info also, might PM him,,he will see this thread I'm sure,,brian

yes the heaters were ALL optional - there were 3 heater versions: the bottom of the line one was only dealer installed,, the middle one was a factory installed 'standard' ["recirculating"] version that had no cables, just a 3 position fan switch, and a factory installed deluxe model w/ the fancy control unit [tho they could also be dealer add-ons]

that option stuff is how GM and the dealers made the gravy

Thanks a TON red. That's exactly what I needed. darn, I have the deluxe, ain't I special..

Now I just gotta find a replacement core..

best bet is to find a rad shop that can get the right size core and put the end tanks from yours onto it - possible, but many rad shops can't be bothered, need to find one run by an old timer, but some of the repro suppliers may have them too - they also have cables and all the parts for the control

I had my 72 heater recored, and then found out that a new assembly was actually a bit cheaper (not including shipping). So my momma told me...you better shop around!

so far, the parts store around here only go back to about '62.. I'll be checking on re-cores today..

Red, I've seen the recirlator and the delux, what did the cheaper one look like? Also I've seen one that looked more like sometime for a tractor than a truck. It was just a box without a blower. I think it was in a GMC big truck. Got any idea's on this.

Avette, I wouldn't expect the chain stores to have much that old, hafta check around the repro dealers, especially ones that have used parts if you can't find a rad shop to make ya one

Jeff, you can just make the cheapie out here , and here - the chrome logo button on it just sez GM, and I think they used it on Chevs and GMCs both for at least part of the AD years until the early 60's - the cover on that one [with fan/motor] came from a dealer dumpster in Victoria BC, thrown out as obsolete in the 80's

might be the one you refer to? just a heater core covered with that shroud that contains the fan, but there is one in my stash that's 'boxier' that I haven't really paid much attention to as I have no idea what it's from!

I figured that but asked em anyway..none..I also kinda had my hopes up that LMC might have one. They have everything but..

Not a big deal, I'm in a small area outside of Oklahoma City and am pretty sure I can get one of the local home boys to rebuild one for me..
