Anyone figured out a solution that works as well as the original? Any idea why this piece still isn't reproduced? Or is it, and I've just not found it?
I've never had my hands or eyes on an NOS Radio in the box to know what that seal really looks like. I've got two or three complete radios and not a one has a good seal. they're all in various states of disintegration. Any ideas? Thanks!

Window air conditioner sealing foam might work well, that's what I used to reproduce the foam seal on my A/C vent,,black spongy stuff. Brian

Josh,

Here is a radio with a foam seal in poor condition. Side View of the same radio. They usually look like this (the knobs are wrong on this one, too).

I have never seen a reproduction seal but hope that some else has. 64fleetside's suggestion is a good one. I do not think that it matter is the seal is a little too big; you just wat a seal between the speaker plate and the inside of the grill.

Ha...yeah, Tim..that's exactly what most of mine look like! CRAPPY!! Thanks for that picture of the good one! Did you rig that speaker brace? none of my radios have ever had that...
I just spoke with a gentleman in Ohio, and he said what he does for the 54 speaker foam is us a 47-53 and cut it down, because the 54 is narrower...I've never had the need to look at one, but does this seem possible to you? I think I might try it.

Greg, Thanks. If someone buys this, please let us know if it is the right seal.

1954 Radio Speaker Seal Chevy $5.50

Josh,

When you asked "Did you rig that speaker brace? none of my radios have ever had that...", were you referring to (1) the plate that the speaker is attached to or (2) the bracket that hold the side of the radio under the dask (I recall that it attached to the side of the radio and part of the cowl air-scoop brace).

Tim,

I was referring to the piece of plate metal that's at a 45 degree angle to your speaker grille...It just dawned on me how massive the magnet is on that speaker...I know my OE speaker didn't have a magnet like that! Is that a repro six volt speaker?

Josh,

If you are referring to the brownish sheet that goes from the top of the speaker plate towards the rear of the radio (at a 45 degree downwards angle), that is a cardboard cover that is available from Chevs of the 40s

That is a replacement speaker but it is pretty much the same size as an original speaker (maybe the magnet at the rear is a larger). I will check out an original speaker tomorrow.

Is that a repro six volt speaker? Anyway, I just ordered a few things from Heavy Chevy, including that sponge seal...I'll be shocked if it's anything like the OE seal for 5 bucks. Might get a pleasant surprise, but I'm not holding my breath! I'll let everyone know how that goes!
